Why biophilic design is more than just a trend

Biophilic design is a design approach that connects humans with nature within the built environment, going beyond mere aesthetics to incorporate sustainable practices and energy-efficient technologies. This approach aims to restore the innate human inclination towards nature, which has been shown to positively impact overall well-being. By integrating natural elements like wood and stone, organic shapes, plants, earthy textures, and natural lighting, biophilic design creates spaces that foster a deeper connection to the natural world. Thermory, a specialist in sustainable thermowood, highlights the use of thermally modified wood as an effective way to implement biophilic principles. Their chemical-free heat treatment enhances wood’s durability and stability for both indoor and outdoor applications, providing a deep, natural shade. An example of this is the Maidla Nature Resort in Estonia, where Thermory’s Benchmark ash cladding was used to design a cabin that harmonizes with its forest surroundings, featuring vertical exterior cladding and interior use for floors and ceilings, creating a unified aesthetic. This application showcases how thermally modified wood can withstand environmental conditions while contributing to the building's aesthetic and acoustic properties. Novawood, another thermowood producer, similarly advocates for heat-treated wood products sourced from sustainably managed forests. Their Novathermowood range includes exterior cladding, decking, flooring, and interior panels, all designed to mimic natural environments and enhance a sense of calm. The unique colors and patterns achieved through thermal modification contribute to grounding and calming effects, especially when combined with indoor plants. Big River Group, a timber manufacturer, emphasizes the warmth and natural beauty timber adds to biophilic design. Their products, such as ArmourCab and Armourpanel, offer decorative wood paneling in various native species like Blackbutt and Spotted Gum. These materials are chosen for their unique grain structures and durability, making them suitable for high-traffic areas like flooring, walls, and cabinetry. The Warrnambool Library and Learning Centre project exemplifies this, where Big River’s Blackbutt products were used for a dramatic timber staircase, providing comfort and a connection to nature within the interior. Sculptform, specializing in timber battens, cladding, and screens, stresses the importance of high-quality timber to accentuate natural features in biophilic designs. Their products, available in Australian Ash, Spotted Gum, and American Oak, are used in diverse applications, including the multilevel ceilings at The Workshop in Sydney. This project, designed by Bates Smart, integrates biophilic elements like planter halos and natural materials to achieve a 6-Star Green Star Rating, demonstrating the environmental benefits of such design choices. SUPAWOOD also contributes to biophilic design with architecturally designed timber wall and ceiling panels that mimic natural forms and woodgrains, as seen in the custom-shaped SUPALINE panels at Castle Towers shopping center. Flooring specialists GH Commercial incorporate biophilic principles into their products, such as the Lichen 1.5 and Lichen Community collections. These carpet designs draw inspiration from natural lichens, using tufting technology to create authentic textures and patterns. At Saint Kentigern Schools in New Zealand, GH Commercial’s Lichen collections were used to create an inspiring learning environment, with patterns that aid wayfinding and distinguish learning zones, all while reinforcing a connection to nature. Interior specialists Baresque highlight the role of wallcoverings in biophilic design, replicating natural textures and patterns. For the IDES restaurant refurbishment in Melbourne, Baresque’s Zintra Sticks in Merbau and Cork Cobra wallcoverings were chosen to complement existing timber elements, adding warmth and intimacy while addressing acoustic needs. Fairview, a facade system designer, notes an increasing trend in integrating natural elements and woodgrain finishes, extending biophilic design beyond aesthetics to sustainable manufacturing practices and a circular economy. Finally, House of Bamboo views biophilic design as an essential component of sustainable and emotionally resonant architecture. Their certified engineered bamboo and rattan materials contribute to Green Star, LEED, WELL Building Standard, and BREEAM certifications, offering sustainable options like Cross Laminated Bamboo panels and heat-treated woven bamboo decking. The overarching message is that biophilic design is not a fleeting trend but a fundamental approach to creating nurturing and calming built environments that honor our intrinsic connection to the natural world. #BiophilicDesign #SustainableArchitecture #NaturalMaterials #Thermowood #TimberDesign #InteriorDesign #GreenBuilding #Wellbeing #ArchitecturalDesign #BiophilicDesign #SustainableArchitecture #NaturalMaterials #Thermowood #TimberDesign #InteriorDesign #GreenBuilding #Wellbeing #ArchitecturalDesign
