How Good Is INSL-X Paint by Benjamin Moore? A Tested Review
This article reviews INSL-X Sure Step paint by Benjamin Moore, a high-quality indoor/outdoor floor paint designed to create a strong bond and provide traction. The paint was tested by Glenda Taylor, a product tester specializing in construction and remodeling, as part of a larger evaluation of concrete paints. The testing involved applying the paint to concrete pavers and then subjecting them to water, stains, and abrasives. The INSL-X Sure Step paint performed exceptionally well, maintaining its appearance even after significant abuse.
INSL-X Sure Step is an acrylic paint suitable for various indoor and outdoor surfaces, including concrete, asphalt, wood, and metal, though it is not recommended for garage floors or driveways with vehicle traffic. It provides a durable, nonslip coating, making it ideal for high-traffic areas such as steps, patios, and pool decks. The paint is available in six colors plus white. A key feature is its abrasion resistance, which was demonstrated through tests involving sand and gravel, where the painted surface showed no scuffs or scratches.
The application process for INSL-X Sure Step is straightforward. It can be applied with a roller or a brush, and it self-levels, ensuring a smooth finish without brush marks. For larger areas, maintaining a "wet edge" is advised to prevent overlap marks. The paint is dry to the touch in under two hours, but a 4 to 5-day cure period is recommended before the surface is subjected to heavy traffic. A significant advantage of this Benjamin Moore paint is its self-priming nature on untreated concrete and stucco, eliminating the need for a separate primer. However, for wood decks, a primer designed for walking surfaces might be beneficial to enhance adhesion, and for metal surfaces like fire escape steps, Benjamin Moore's Super Spec HP Primer is suggested for a strong bond.
The paint's nonslip quality comes from its "grit factor," which consists of tiny textured aggregate uniformly mixed into the formula. This grit is noticeable upon touching the dried surface, contributing effectively to traction. For other paints that lack this feature, a clear, gritty aggregate can be added. Overall, INSL-X Sure Step is presented as an excellent option for updating the appearance and enhancing the safety of concrete patios, walkways, steps, or interior concrete floors, offering durability, ease of application, and a nonslip finish. For surfaces requiring resistance to vehicular traffic, alternatives such as the Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield Garage Floor Coating Kit are recommended.
