The Best Interior Paints for Every Room of the House, Tested and Approved
Selecting the right interior paint is crucial for achieving durable and aesthetically pleasing results, yet the vast array of options can be overwhelming. This article details a comprehensive testing process undertaken to identify the best interior paint products available today. Researchers analyzed over three dozen brands, prioritizing those with strong reputations, high customer satisfaction, versatility, usability, and competitive pricing. Emphasis was also placed on low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) products, reflecting advancements in eco-friendly paint formulations that minimize fumes.
The testing methodology involved applying eight selected paint options to drywall pieces and wood baseboards. A black permanent marker circle was drawn on each drywall piece to evaluate coverage, with the number of coats required to conceal it being a key metric. The self-leveling properties of each paint, indicating how smoothly and mark-free the paint dries, were also assessed. Both brush and roller applications were used to compare coverage and uniformity, ensuring no thin spots remained. Post-application, painted swatches were allowed to cure for two weeks before undergoing scrubbability tests using an all-purpose cleaner and a white rag to check for color transfer and durability.
Key findings highlighted several top performers. Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint Interior Acrylic Latex was named "Best Overall" due to its superior coverage, high resistance to wear, excellent finish quality, and minimal odor, making it suitable for those sensitive to paint fumes. Its main drawbacks were its higher price and limited availability to Sherwin-Williams stores. For a more budget-friendly option, Glidden Premium PPG Eggshell Interior Latex Paint received the "Best Bang for the Buck" award. It offered good coverage and a smooth finish, though it showed slight color transfer during the scrub test, suggesting it's better suited for low-traffic areas like adult bedrooms rather than children's rooms.
The "Upgrade Pick" went to Sherwin-Williams Emerald Designer Interior Latex, praised for its rich color, velvety texture, excellent coverage with no visible brush marks, and scrubbability, despite being pricey and having a faint odor. Behr Premium Plus Interior Satin Enamel Paint was recognized as "Best for Kitchen and Bath" for its moisture-resistant and washable qualities, good coverage, and an innovative pourable funnel design, although it had a detectable odor. Sherwin-Williams Duration Home Interior Acrylic Latex was the "Best Stain-Blocking" paint, capable of covering permanent marker in a single liberal coat and proving highly washable, though it is also a pricier option.
Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel was selected as the "Best Interior Enamel" for its exceptional coverage, lack of brush marks, and excellent scrubbability, making it ideal for high-usage rooms and wood surfaces. Behr Ultra Stain-Blocking Ceiling Paint earned "Best for Ceilings" honors by effectively hiding imperfections and blocking stains, though it sometimes required three coats for complete stain concealment. Lastly, HGTV Home Infinity Interior Paint & Primer was the "Best One-Coat Paint," impressing with its ability to cover permanent marker in a single coat, even in lighter shades, and its low VOC content, though it occasionally left slight applicator marks.
