The Best Interior Paint | Reviews by Wirecutter

This article details an extensive research process to identify the best interior paints, based primarily on the expertise of professional painters. Over 30 hours of research, including interviews with eight painters possessing a combined 152 years of experience, and a review of over 55 interior paints, led to the recommendation of Benjamin Moore Regal Select as the top choice. Half of the interviewed professionals specifically named Regal Select as their preferred high-quality paint, citing its superior coverage, durability, and cleanability. The article emphasizes that professional painters are reliable sources for paint recommendations because their livelihood and reputation depend on the lasting quality of their work. They regularly test products and are keenly aware of issues like fading and staining. Regal Select is lauded for its ease of application, making it suitable for both professionals and DIYers. Its thick consistency minimizes drips and splatters, and it allows for a smooth, even sheen with minimal brushstrokes. The article notes that while Regal Select, priced around $50 a gallon, is not inexpensive, its quality justifies the cost through fewer required coats, better aesthetics, and extended longevity compared to cheaper alternatives. The accessibility of Regal Select through dedicated paint retailers and smaller hardware stores is also highlighted, as these venues offer knowledgeable staff for color matching and expert advice, which is often superior to that found in larger box stores. As a runner-up, Sherwin-Williams Cashmere is recommended for its comparable characteristics to Regal Select, including good coverage, easy application, and a washable finish, although it is slightly more expensive. The article also introduces Benjamin Moore Ben as a budget-friendly alternative. While Ben doesn't offer the same level of coverage or long-term durability as Regal Select, it is still considered a solid option by some painters for its price point and is available through specialty retailers. The distinction between paint quality and cost is a recurring theme, with professional painters consistently advising that investing in higher-quality paint ultimately saves time and money by reducing the need for frequent repainting and requiring fewer coats. Key criteria for selecting a good paint include a 100-percent acrylic binder for better adhesion and durability, and a high percent volume of solids (typically in the high-30-percent to high-40-percent range) for a thicker film and better hiding power. The article also addresses misconceptions surrounding Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). It explains that a "low-VOC" or "zero-VOC" label on a paint can pertains to the manufacturing process and the liquid state of the paint, not necessarily to the emissions released during drying, which are more relevant to indoor air quality. However, brands like Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams often conduct additional independent testing to ensure lower emissions during the drying phase, and proper ventilation during painting is always advised. The guide also mentions Benjamin Moore's Green Promise program, which includes comprehensive environmental testing for their paints. The article also touches upon competing brands, such as Benjamin Moore Aura, which is highly regarded for its exceptional coverage but is also very expensive. Behr and Valspar receive mixed reviews, and their exclusive availability at large home improvement stores is noted as a drawback, given the preference for specialty paint retailers. The author's personal experience, including a decade in residential construction and a four-year home renovation project, further supports the insights gathered from the professional painters. The article concludes by reiterating the value of investing in quality paint to achieve superior and longer-lasting results.
