Best paint brands chosen by interior designers – their top picks revealed

The choice of paint can significantly impact the outcome of an interior design project, influencing not only the aesthetic but also the longevity and overall feel of a space. This guide compiles insights from leading interior designers on their preferred paint brands, detailing the specific qualities that make each brand stand out. Benjamin Moore is a favored brand among designers like Michael Dolatowski and Leah Ring. Dolatowski highlights Benjamin Moore’s comprehensive design tools, especially its lighting feature on the website, which assists clients in understanding how color depth and life interact with different lighting conditions. He appreciates the extensive color palette, ensuring a perfect match for any desired mood. Current preferred shades include Berber White for its stone-like quality and compatibility with earthy tones, Navy Masterpiece for creating sophisticated, moody spaces when paired with walnut and black glazed ceramic, Weekend Getaway for its peaceful mid-tone green, Conch Shell for a fresh take on pink that can serve as both a supporting and leading color, and Dark Basalt for adding depth and dimension to custom furniture. Leah Ring from Another Human also values Benjamin Moore for its wide range of bright, saturated colors, which supports her firm's color-driven design process and guarantees consistent quality across diverse palettes. Devin Shaffer, lead interior designer at Decorilla, uses both Benjamin Moore and Behr. He commends both for their extensive color options, high quality, performance, and positive customer feedback. Behr paints are particularly noted for their resilience, making them suitable for households with children and pets, enduring daily wear and tear. The variety of finishes, from matte to glossy, allows designers to customize paint choices for specific needs, such as bright living rooms or moisture-prone bathrooms. Farrow & Ball is a top choice for Artem Kropovinsky due to its ability to impart sophistication and richness to any space. He emphasizes the depth of its palette, especially darker hues like Hague Blue and Railings, which create dramatic atmospheres and serve as excellent backdrops for art and furniture. Kropovinsky also praises Farrow & Ball's impressive pigmentation and coverage, which require fewer coats for a smooth, lush finish, making it user-friendly even for DIY enthusiasts. For eco-conscious projects, Thomas Borcherding, lead designer at Homestar Design Remodel, highly recommends Ecos Paints. These paints are non-toxic, zero-VOC, and include a line that actively absorbs VOCs, promoting healthier indoor environments. Borcherding appreciates their modern yet timeless color selection and fair pricing, suggesting that potential users order samples to experience the quality firsthand. Michael Dolatowski also suggests JH Wall Paints, particularly for limewash applications. He notes that these paints offer an attractive, desirable finish with their comprehensive range of interior/exterior options, primers, and sealers. Despite being trendy, limewash has a long history, dating back to Roman times, positioning it as a timeless choice. JH Wall Paints deliver a beautifully matte finish that interacts with light like suede, making them ideal for curved surfaces. Specific color combinations like 105 over 104 create a natural, stone-like appearance, while 150 over 152 with white accents provides a cool and unexpected ambiance. Professional painters, such as Max Mattes of MaxPaint & Restoration, often choose brands based on project needs. He recommends Benjamin Moore's Regal line for durability, smooth finish, and ability to hide imperfections, especially in high-traffic family areas. Behr Premium Plus is favored for its bright, bold colors suitable for entertaining spaces. For smaller projects or budget constraints, Dunn-Edwards is a go-to, as it offers excellent coverage and affordability. Ultimately, selecting the best paint brand involves considering factors like color range, durability, application ease, and environmental impact to achieve desired results.
