Symmetry Meets Style
This case study details the design and construction of the Fotsch Residence in Wisconsin, a new-build home that integrates seamlessly with its natural, wooded landscape. The homeowners, Tom and Dea Fotsch, selected a site characterized by significant elevation changes and an L-shaped buildable area, presenting a unique challenge for the architectural design. They enlisted Will & Fotsch Architects Inc., co-owned by their son Andy Fotsch, to bring their vision to life.
The design process began with the strategic placement of the front door, identified for its optimal view across a wetland. This became the central axis, forming an angled hinge that connects the master bedroom wing to the rest of the house. The exterior of the home features stone masonry that extends to the outdoor paths and landscaping, creating a cohesive aesthetic. Stone quoining was also applied to key architectural elements, including the east vestibule arch and all windows, enhancing the sense of historical foundation despite being a new construction.
Kolbe Windows & Doors' Ultra Series products were extensively used throughout the residence, featuring an aluminum exterior with a Night Sky mica finish and wood interiors. A significant design focus was the strategic placement and sizing of windows to maximize views of the surrounding forest and lakeshore. The home incorporates a variety of window types, some of which are exceptionally large fixed radius units, pushing the boundaries of custom window manufacturing.
Notable window and door features include sliding patio doors with radius transoms, intricately designed with delicate divided lites. A custom diamond shape fills the center of the transom windows, with vertical mullions precisely aligned to the doors below. This diamond motif is echoed in other parts of the house, such as the lower-level powder room, which boasts a unique window design with leaded glazing, custom bronze glass, round patina zinc caming, and European-styled hinges.
Dea's study is adorned with a wall of half-circle windows, complemented by awnings beneath them. Custom-designed performance divided lite bars ensure perfect alignment between the fixed radius windows and the operable units below. Andy Fotsch emphasized that every room was designed to offer views in at least two, and often three, directions, ensuring a constant connection to the panoramic natural surroundings.
Achieving visual continuity was paramount, with window pane sizes driving overall window dimensions and divided lite mullion widths. A 2:3 proportion was consistently applied to create three base pane sizes, from which all window configurations were derived. This geometric approach allowed for variations in window assemblies, using combinations of two, three, or four units to maintain visual harmony across each room and elevation.
Challenges arose, such as with a side-turned diamond window in Tom's study, where precise mullion alignment with the transom above required careful consideration due to the wider frames of the sliding doors below. The design balances strong horizontal and vertical alignments with angles and curves, notably utilizing a 60-degree angle for many elements, which Andy Fotsch describes as more subtle and less harsh than 45 or 90-degree angles. Circular windows are strategically placed beneath roof peaks, and an eyebrow arch roofline follows the curve of upper-level radius windows.
Radius segment picture windows are featured in various locations, including the west elevation's two bedrooms, Tom's study, the vestibule, and the east elevation's upper landing. The project utilized a diverse range of Kolbe products, including dozens of casement, awning, direct set, and folding windows, alongside sliding and swinging door systems. In total, Limitless Builders Inc. installed approximately 60 windows in both rectangular and radius shapes, and seven door systems configured in two-, three-, and four-panel arrangements, all contributing to the home's distinctive style and integration with its environment.
