An Open Floor Plan Makeover You Need to See to Believe
This article showcases a significant open floor plan transformation in a Prairie Village, Kansas, home, led by designer Jaclyn Joslin, founder of Coveted Home. The original decor, characterized by a moody, masculine aesthetic and two-tone wood finishes, did not align with the homeowners' preferences, who sought a brighter, more inviting living space. Joslin's intervention aimed to revitalize the kitchen and living room into a harmonious and functional entertaining area.
Joslin's design philosophy is rooted in comfort, emphasizing that a space must be functional, balanced, and meticulously edited. Her inspiration often stems from her travels and extensive collection of design books and magazines. She also draws guidance from notable designers such as Nickey Kehoe, Nate Berkus, Peter Dunham, Angie Hranowsky, and Studio Pepe. The designer's color preferences are dynamic, currently favoring ocher and mustard, and she advises homeowners to take their time when decorating, especially in a new home, to fully understand its flow and how they will use the space before making significant purchases.
A particular challenge in this project was the fireplace wall. An initial plan was altered when demolition revealed underlying brick, prompting a change in design direction. Joslin's approach prioritizes a delicate balance between her design influence and the clients' tastes. For instance, despite the client expressing a love for color, her inspirational images leaned towards neutrals, requiring Joslin to blend these preferences to achieve an updated, classic, and comfortable style.
The designer's style has evolved to favor timeless and thoughtfully curated spaces with longevity, gravitating back towards sustainable design principles. She observes a trend of mass-produced design and instead advocates for pieces that resist fleeting trends. Her process for new projects involves an initial consultation to understand client needs and space usage, followed by gathering inspirational images. After a period of contemplation, she develops layout plans and selects furniture, fabrics, paint, art, and accessories.
Key elements in the renovated space include the distinct yet open connection between the kitchen and living room, a striking kitchen light fixture, and a custom walnut mantel. Comfort was a primary "must-have" for the homeowners, who desired a space suitable for lounging, watching TV, entertaining, and accommodating their dogs. Joslin recommends investing in high-quality upholstery, particularly sofas, for their durability and comfort, while suggesting saving on art by exploring options from platforms like Etsy, which feature lesser-known artists.
Her design methodology emphasizes patience in balancing style and function. She prioritizes functionality and then seeks out the appropriate aesthetic pieces, trusting that the right items will eventually surface. In addition to her own store, Coveted Home, Joslin supports local businesses like Sid & Co and the River Market Antique Mall in Kansas City, and explores online and boutique retailers such as Jayson Home, The Savoy Flea, Lawson Fenning, Hollywood at Home, Nickey Kehoe, and Chairish for unique decor finds.
