A Bold Lowell Kitchen Renovation Brings the Joy Back to Cooking
Rebecca and Neel Jhaveri, owners of a 100-year-old gambrel house in Lowell, sought to transform their cramped and inefficient kitchen into a functional and aesthetically pleasing space. With a five-year-old and a baby, the kitchen endured constant use, highlighting the need for a renovation that prioritized both utility and character. Their existing kitchen suffered from a tight layout, with workspaces that caused congestion and insufficient storage, further exacerbated by a peninsula that made the room feel confined.
To address these challenges, the Jhaveris enlisted Kelley Elizabeth Antonuccio, principal of Kelley Elizabeth Interiors, whose expertise includes comprehensive interior design and specialized training in kitchen and bath design, particularly cabinetry. Collaborating with Imperial Builders, Antonuccio's primary objective was to maximize every square inch of the available space, which also included a nearby powder room renovation. The initial phase of the project involved expanding the kitchen's footprint by incorporating space from a three-season mudroom and leveling its uneven floor, creating a more expansive, rectangular foundation for the new design.
The renovated kitchen now features a properly seated island, accented with leather West Elm stools, which serves as a central point in the space. Despite the island cabinets being 18 inches deep, compared to a more standard 24 inches, they effectively fulfill their purpose. Strategic window reconfigurations were implemented to accommodate a new Monogram gas range and a custom vent hood adorned with a brass inlay. A key design element is the hand-painted cement tile backsplash by Walker Zanger, which was a significant stylistic choice for the homeowners, setting a bold tone for the kitchen. Rebecca Jhaveri expressed that despite the tile being a budgetary splurge, its unique character and prominent visibility from the front door made it a worthwhile investment.
Custom cabinetry by Kelley Elizabeth Interiors was selected in a 'Moody Blue' finish, drawing inspiration from the backsplash's kaleidoscope pattern. This choice reflected the Jhaveris' preference for color and their desire for a design that felt current yet timeless, avoiding an overly modern aesthetic. Cherry wood was incorporated into the upper cabinets and the vent hood, providing a rich brown contrast to the navy blue and adding a layer of sophistication that complemented the age of the house. Behind the glass-fronted upper cabinets, a dishware set acquired during the couple's honeymoon in Amalfi is displayed.
Functionality was also a key consideration for material selection. A leathered honed-jet-mist granite countertop was chosen for the perimeter cabinets due to its durability and ability to withstand frequent use. An apron sink, crafted from the same granite, contributed to a seamless and cohesive look. For the island, Carrera marble was chosen to introduce brightness and prevent the overall design from feeling too heavy. Honey bronze fixtures and hardware, along with gilded lotus pendants by Jamie Young, served as decorative accents, adding a vintage-inspired charm that seamlessly integrated with the home's character.
The renovation significantly improved the kitchen's functionality, with Rebecca highlighting the new 36-inch range, capable of accommodating four full-size pans, and the regular use of the double ovens. Antonuccio also designed a dedicated appliance hutch with retractable doors to neatly house a coffee station, microwave, air fryer, and smoothie blender, alongside a shallow nine-inch pantry next to the refrigerator. The adjacent powder room was transformed with bold wallpaper by York, featuring a ginkgo-gold metallic print on a black background, complementing the kitchen's vibrant backsplash. A pistachio-green vanity was introduced to balance the assertive wallpaper, while the ceiling, trim, and baseboards were painted black to create a seamless, expansive feel in the small space. The Jhaveris expressed immense satisfaction with the outcome, noting that Antonuccio successfully translated their ideas into a cohesive and enhanced design that exceeded their expectations.
