Updated Kitchen Tells a New Story
A Massachusetts couple, recently retired, relocated to Nashville, TN, seeking a city equidistant to their children. They purchased a Victorian home in the Five Points neighborhood and enlisted Jessica Maros of Maros Designs to customize it to their aesthetic preferences. The design project focused on transforming the existing beautiful home into a space that reflected the homeowners' unique style, with a central theme of storytelling.
The kitchen's focal point is an Anthropologie Judarn Floral mural wallcovering, chosen by the client for its narrative qualities and to accentuate the room's interesting roofline. The designer explored various options like tile or wood, but the client's preference for wallpaper led to the selection of the mural. The existing perimeter cabinetry, initially green, was repainted in Sherwin Williams’ Malachite Green to complement the wallcovering and a treasured art piece belonging to the homeowners.
To ensure the wallcovering's longevity and vibrancy, it was applied to multiple walls and the soffit above a Thermador range. A powerful Thermador ventilation hood was installed to effectively remove steam and cooking pollutants, thereby protecting the wallpaper, a creative approach in kitchen design. The lower portion of the perimeter walls was fitted with wainscotting, serving both as a design element to break up the wallcovering's height and as a practical solution given the wallpaper's dimensions. This addition provided a visual 'breath of fresh air,' preventing the wallpaper from overpowering the space.
Functionality was significantly improved with a new, larger custom island from Builder Supply Source, painted in Sherwin Williams’ Greek Villa. The previous island was small and awkwardly placed; the new, nearly square island optimizes the room's flow and provides abundant storage on all four sides, including the seating area. The island also incorporates a dishwasher, an electronics drawer with an outlet, a pullout trash bin, and a new sink with a Brizo faucet. The expanded storage capacity was crucial for the homeowners to properly store their extensive collection of china and silverware.
A 15-light, 50-inch-wide statement chandelier from Visual Comfort, featuring a Burnished Brass finish, was selected for the oversized island, matching pendants in the soffit. The choice emphasized the importance of distinctive lighting to create unique moments within the room, while still ensuring functional illumination. An adjacent built-in was updated with fresh paint, brass mesh inserts, and new hardware from Industry Hardware, matching the kitchen's knobs and pulls. This unit also features a quartz countertop and zellige tile backsplash, mirroring the selections in the main kitchen area.
The backsplash and countertop were intentionally kept 'quieter' with neutral tones to balance the 'vocal' wallcovering and cabinetry. The durable quartz countertop provides stain resistance, a practical benefit for a homeowner who enjoys cooking. The Pure White trapezoidal mosaic zellige tile from Zia Tile introduces texture through its handmade variations, adding character without overwhelming the design. Additionally, a built-in between the kitchen and living room was repurposed into a wet bar, featuring Malachite Green paint, matching hardware, a quartz countertop, a small sink with a Delta Faucet, a beverage refrigerator, and handmade Daltile in deep green and black shades, all illuminated by a window and a single pendant.
