Pretty & functional: Aesthetic update to this Prospect home includes jaw-dropping kitchen
Greg and Heather Spencer, residents of the Hillcrest subdivision in Prospect, sought to enhance the aesthetic and functionality of their four-bedroom home, particularly their kitchen. Initially content with the spaciousness and footprint, they found the existing kitchen, dating back to 2003, to be heavy, dark, and highly dysfunctional. Heather expressed a desire for increased counter space and bar seating but was uncertain about how to achieve these improvements effectively.
They engaged Knot & Co. Interiors, a Louisville-based interior design firm co-owned by Dani Harris and Kristin Jordan, for a cosmetic update. Jordan characterized the original kitchen as having traditional oak raised-panel cabinets, black granite countertops, and honey-oak wood floors, contributing to a darker ambiance. The renovation aimed to lighten and brighten the space while significantly improving its usability.
The redesigned kitchen now features a streamlined design with inset cabinetry, replacing several original built-ins. A notable addition is an appliance cabinet that helps keep the ample counter space clear of clutter by discreetly housing items like the microwave, toaster, and tea kettle. The centerpiece of the remodeled kitchen is a substantial 57-inch-by-128-inch quartz island, fulfilling Heather's wish for extensive bar seating. This large island serves as a central gathering point for parties and family breakfasts, establishing itself as the heart of the kitchen.
Despite a neutral palette comprising Revere Pewter cabinetry and Swiss Coffee walls, Knot & Co. Interiors integrated various small details to introduce visual interest. Jordan highlighted the use of different hardware detailing and a mix of slab and panel doors and drawers, creating variation within the consistent color scheme. Unlacquered brass hardware in diverse shapes was chosen for its aging properties, allowing it to develop a natural patina over time. The kitchen also features a counter-to-ceiling artisan subway tile backsplash, which provides texture and undulation, offering a modern interpretation of traditional white subway tile with its significant depth-adding variations. Floating shelves complement the backsplash, providing display areas for decorative items.
Beyond the kitchen, other areas of the Spencer home received updates. The laundry room was refreshed with butcher block countertops, custom shelving designed for laundry baskets, and a vibrant floral wallpaper. The pantry was updated with cabinetry matching the new kitchen's aesthetic. A small room that originally only contained a toilet was transformed into a butler's pantry, a feature Heather is particularly fond of. The design team ensured that all renovations harmonized with the home's existing traditional architecture, maintaining continuity throughout the updated spaces.
