The Block 2021: Hallway, Laundry and Powder Room Reveal
The Block 2021's "Hell Week" challenged teams to complete the crucial connecting spaces of their homes: hallways, laundries, and powder rooms, with varying success and design philosophies. The task aimed to unify the diverse styles and layouts across the different houses.
Kirsty & Jesse secured first place with a score of 29.5/30, spending $44,428. Their main hallway seamlessly blended contemporary elements with their established Hamptons style, featuring a smart lock, a bench seat, a shell chandelier, and in-floor lighting highlighting architectural arches. The judges lauded the welcoming entry and were particularly impressed by the powder room, which functioned as a full-size bathroom, and a highly functional laundry with extensive storage and elegant tiled splashbacks. Their meticulous execution and thoughtful design elements resonated strongly with the judges, leading to their victory.
Ronnie & Georgia claimed second place with 29/30 points, investing $37,418. Their gallery-style entrance hall was a standout, adorned with exquisite artworks by artists like Jai Vasicek and Lizzy Stageman, complemented by a flawlessly finished Gyprock. The sun-drenched corridor, enhanced by VELUX Skylights, created a bright and inviting path to the living room. A steel-frame door elegantly separated the living area from the bedroom hall, further embellished with art, and a clever loft storage area was incorporated above. Their laundry space was also noted for ticking all the essential boxes in terms of design and utility.
Mitch & Mark earned third place with 26.5/30, with a spend of $25,092. Their design featured a striking glass floor in the hallway, designed to channel light to the downstairs area, and beautiful artwork. The hallway effectively delineated the living and sleeping zones, a feature appreciated by the judges, especially when it led to a full-size pantry that had been conspicuously absent in their kitchen week reveal. The versatile and fully equipped laundry, complete with garage access, also served as an impromptu mudroom with ample storage, successfully tying the various parts of the house together.
Tanya & Vito finished fourth with 25/30, spending $34,138. They maintained their distinct colourful and quirky style throughout these spaces. A large aluminium and glass door was used to separate the living room from the hallway, while simultaneously allowing light into a compact yet functional office space. Their art-lined corridor included a powder room. However, a visible switchboard cover and a potentially polarizing mirror in the powder room drew some criticism. Despite these minor setbacks, the laundry room impressed Shaynna with its generous storage solutions.
Josh & Luke placed last with a score of 18.5/30, spending $29,504. Despite their efforts to rectify previous layout issues during "Hell Week," their main hallway, characterized by six doors, and an incomplete powder room led to disappointment among the judges. Nevertheless, their laundry, located at the end of the hall, was recognized as one of their best rooms, described as spacious and well-appointed, offering a highlight in an otherwise challenging week for the duo.
