The Block 2020: Jimmy and Tam's Hallway and Laundry Room Reveal | Week 9
In Week 9 of The Block 2020, Queensland contestants Jimmy and Tam, consistent winners throughout the season, collaborated with The Oslo winners Tess and Luke for All Star week. Despite the challenge of delivering multiple spaces, the teams successfully completed the task. Jimmy and Tam had high expectations for their game-changer chandelier and a hidden laundry door. The judges, Darren Palmer, Shaynna Blaze, and Neale Whitaker, provided their evaluations of the spaces.
Upon entering House 5, the judges were immediately impressed by the grand entrance, particularly a Murano glass chandelier in the entryway, which Neale and Shaynna described as 'stunning' and 'absolutely beautiful.' Darren appreciated the layered palette created by the light against the ribbed wall. Neale, however, was critical of the entryway table, a glass cabinet displaying an Alexander McQueen book, suggesting it felt more like a shop display than a welcoming home feature. He desired a more inviting console display, such as flowers in a '50s style vase, and a rug on the terrazzo floor to convey a sense of 'Welcome home.' Darren, despite not knowing what to expect, felt the design successfully meshed different elements of the house.
Shaynna was eager to discover what lay behind a secret door, initially hoping for a wine room. To her surprise, it revealed a laundry. Darren hailed the decision to conceal the laundry door within the feature wall as a 'masterstroke,' preventing an awkward placement directly opposite the front door. Neale concurred, calling it 'genius.' The laundry itself featured a vibrant color palette, matching the kitchen's style, with thoughtful details like a styled shelf and practical storage solutions. Shaynna was particularly pleased to find a tall cabinet specifically designed to accommodate a broom, an inclusion that elicited her delight.
Returning to the hallway, Darren noted that House 5 stood out as one of the most unique homes he had encountered on The Block, emphasizing how many potentially problematic ideas had coalesced successfully. The judges then discovered another hidden door at the bottom of the stairs, leading to a cleverly concealed powder room. Shaynna found it 'sweet,' Neale described it as 'very simple, but nicely executed,' and Darren questioned, 'What is not to love?' Jimmy and Tam's characteristic use of color was evident, with a pink hand towel and soap adding a bright accent to the otherwise white space. Neale and Shaynna admired the mirror, likening it to a '50s TV set with antennas and legs.
The final area inspected was the staircase. While generally praised, a significant oversight was identified: a large window looking directly onto the street without any privacy covering. Shaynna expressed concern about the lack of privacy, and Darren stated it couldn't proceed to sale in that condition. Tam clarified during judging that they intended to install a privacy solution. At the top of the stairs, Neale was particularly impressed by a pop art print created by Luke during the All Star art challenge, commending its high standard. Darren also highlighted the seamless continuity between the staircase and the flooring both downstairs and upstairs, noting that this level of execution was unparalleled among the houses seen that day.
Additionally, Jimmy and Tam used the week to revisit and complete their walk-in wardrobe, a 're-do room.' They had faced criticism earlier in the season for prioritizing the master ensuite over the walk-in wardrobe. Addressing the feedback, they modified the layout, closing off a wall from their ensuite and extending the wardrobe space to create a luxurious area for potential buyers.
