The Block 2017: Hallway And Laundry Room Reveals
The eighth week of "The Block 2017" television series focused on the highly anticipated hallway and laundry room reveals. This week proved particularly challenging for all contestant teams, with many struggling to complete their spaces to the high standards expected by the judges. Despite the difficulties, every team managed to present finished rooms for judging, though some minor imperfections such as paintwork issues and missing architraves were noted.
Sticks & Wombat achieved their first-ever win with a score of 28.5. The judges praised their ability to incorporate feedback from previous weeks, particularly from buyer's advocates, by introducing softer styling elements. Their quality craftsmanship and practical design choices for both the hallway and laundry impressed the judges, Shaynna Blaze, Darren Palmer, and Neale Whitaker, who highlighted the successful blend of femininity with their usual masculine aesthetic and their responsiveness to criticism.
Josh and Elyse secured a close second place with a score of 27. Their hallway garnered significant positive attention, featuring nine-foot-high ceilings, a handcrafted clay chandelier, and a striking steel door. Neale Whitaker expressed strong admiration for their hallway's impact. However, their laundry room's lack of storage and the absence of an additional toilet, which other teams had included, led to a deduction in points from Shaynna Blaze and Darren Palmer, preventing them from taking the top spot.
Jason and Sarah, following a strong comeback the previous week, continued their momentum with a score of 26.5. Their hallway and laundry rooms were described as breathtaking, primarily due to the inclusion of exposed timber trusses and a skylight, which created a spacious and impactful entrance. Shaynna Blaze appreciated the restored period door but questioned the pendant lights, while Darren Palmer was particularly enamored with the skylight. Neale Whitaker found their laundry, with its combination of Caesarstone, smoked glass, and patterned tiles, to be "sexy."
Ronnie and Georgia finished with 24.5 points. The judges appreciated the overall aesthetic of their hallway but noted several unfinished aspects and a mismatch of period features, specifically a Victorian archway paired with Art Deco cornices. Shaynna Blaze pointed out a "rookie error" in their laundry—the omission of an ironing board cupboard—while Darren Palmer admired the native flora artwork. Neale Whitaker felt the hallway had a good impact and feel despite its flaws.
Hannah and Clint placed last with a score of 22, dubbing the week "hellway week" due to their intense struggles. Their hallway was deemed underwhelming, and a second, unexpected hallway was criticized for resembling a dormitory by Shaynna Blaze. Darren Palmer, however, commended their laundry for its ample storage. Neale Whitaker acknowledged their respect for the house's heritage but wished for a more welcoming atmosphere.
