The Block 2022: master bedroom and walk-in wardrobe reveals
The Block 2022 competition featured master bedroom and walk-in wardrobe reveals, culminating in various outcomes for the five participating houses. Each team faced challenges including renovation timelines, building issues, and painting dilemmas, all while vying for a $50,000 Vintec ESPACE walk-in wine cellar and a mature tree. The judging panel, consisting of Shaynna, Neale, and Darren, provided feedback ranging from high praise to significant critiques across the different designs.
Tom and Sarah-Jane of House 1 secured the win with a score of 28 ½, spending $21,992. Their master suite, characterized by a green and serene aesthetic, received unanimous acclaim. The judges highlighted the cozy wood-burning fireplace, the "new rural" style, and strategic budgeting decisions such as chair-rail wainscoting that allowed the large ceiling rose and heritage cornicing to stand out. The combination of rattan bedhead, inlayed bedsides, corduroy cushions, and a check bedspread was also noted as a winning element. The walk-in wardrobe, though lacking cabinet doors, was deemed well-styled and emotionally appealing to potential buyers due to its presentation.
Rachel and Ryan from House 2 achieved a score of 27 ½, with a spend of $21,235. Their master bedroom was praised for its warm, calming atmosphere, a significant improvement from previous criticisms regarding cold styling. The stacked stone fireplace was a standout feature. Despite minor imperfections, such as a smaller-than-ideal rug, the room's overall vibe, natural textures, and the beautiful sliding barn door leading to the walk-in robe were well-received. The walk-in robe, described as "palatial," offered generous storage and further enhanced the country contemporary feel, resonating strongly with the judges.
Ankur and Sharon of House 3 scored 28, having spent $37,213. Their master wing showcased an eclectic and theatrical "Francophile" style, incorporating antique furniture and a repurposed original front door. The grandeur, scale, furniture choices, ceiling height, and a Marie Antoinette portrait contributed to an opulent ambiance. However, the judges noted some inconsistencies, such as Deco-style lighting that clashed with the overall theme and concerns about budget management, specifically an unnecessary padded bedhead. The walk-in robe, with its central island and attractive color palette, was highly admired for its glamour and generous space, leading to an overall positive, if not flawless, evaluation.
Dylan and Jenny of House 4 scored 25 ½, spending $30,358. Their master suite was accessed through a large walk-in robe, which was initially unexpected but impressed with its high-end glamour and quality. The color palette and a lavish chandelier were also commended. However, the master bedroom itself fell short of expectations. While initially described as "luxe deco" and adhering to a country aesthetic, closer inspection revealed flaws, particularly with an unfinished window seat. The judges felt the bedroom lacked the "oomph" and finesse seen in the walk-in robe and previous guest bedroom, suggesting a rushed execution.
Omar and Oz from House 5 received the lowest score of 22 ½, with a spend of $20,048. Their master bedroom was found to be "visually overwhelming," with the judges noting a lack of clear focal points. The inclusion of a study and reading nook, intended as a key feature, was criticized for making the room feel too small and for its cluttered, cheaply styled appearance. Despite some positive aspects like repurposed original fretwork, chunky carpet, and ceiling treatment, the room did not meet the high expectations set by their previous double-bathroom win. The walk-in wardrobe also failed to impress, primarily due to a large ottoman that hindered space and insufficient storage, raising concerns about its appeal to potential buyers.
