The Block 2018 master bedroom reveals: design duo Alisa and Lysandra have their say
The Block 2018 master bedroom and walk-in wardrobe reveals faced initial challenges with a slow start to the week, creating tension among contestants, especially Hayden and Sara, who were reconsidering their participation due to previous harsh criticism. Despite the slow beginning, all teams raced to complete their luxurious retreats, prompting Homes To Love to invite former Block winners Alisa and Lysandra to provide their expert opinions on each room.
Kerrie and Spence's Apartment 1 master bedroom, despite their previous success with the ensuite, was described as somewhat uninspired. While the bedhead was aesthetically pleasing and the bed well-styled, the overall impression lacked the desired luxury. Judges expressed disappointment, expecting more 'va-va-voom' from a luxury apartment's master bedroom. The decision to expand the walk-in wardrobe by reducing the ensuite size was noted, offering ample storage but ultimately not elevating the room's overall impact. Alisa and Lysandra appreciated the bedhead and velvet linen but found the room lacked a 'wow factor' and disagreed with the pendant light's placement, feeling it added little aesthetically. Their score for Kerrie and Spence was 24/30.
Courtney and Hans' Apartment 2 featured a remarkably large master bedroom, comparable to a one-bedroom apartment, complete with a king-sized bed and a sitting area. However, the expansive space was not utilized effectively. Judges felt the room was a 'great waste of space,' lacking the grandiose elements expected, such as a couch, ottoman, large rug, or floor-to-ceiling mirrors. Courtney's indecisiveness regarding artwork led to a lack of direction and confidence in making bold design choices. Alisa and Lysandra observed an improvement in Courtney and Hans's overall design compared to their previous reveals, particularly liking the LED strip lighting behind the curtains and the soft, luxurious walk-in wardrobe. However, they found the color palette unappealing and noted a lack of cohesion and warmth, with mismatched elements. Courtney and Hans received a score of 22/30.
Jess and Norm's Penthouse Apartment 4 master bedroom presented a cheerful blue and yellow palette, which some judges found overwhelming. Judge Neale likened it to a Gold Class cinema suite, disapproving of the prominent TV. Shaynna believed their guest bedroom had been more fitting for a master, as this master suite, despite a beautifully styled bed, lacked the required sense of luxury for a penthouse. Alisa and Lysandra praised the wall sconces and the walk-in wardrobe's color palette. Yet, they considered the room's size more suitable for a third bedroom and found the yellow bed linen too bright and stimulating for a master bedroom, agreeing with the judges about the niches in the TV wall. Their score for Jess and Norm was 22.5/30.
Bianca and Carla's Penthouse Apartment 5 received commendation for their successful use of a neutral palette, incorporating diverse tones and textures, and their signature bedside tables were noted. Despite these positive aspects, the room was criticized for its craftsmanship, specifically an uneven timber-paneled feature wall and a missing air-con vent, which the team chose not to rectify. The judges described the room as 'style over substance,' raising concerns about functionality and an overly masculine feel. Alisa and Lysandra appreciated the herringbone flooring and custom timber cabinet in the TV wall but felt the room did not meet the standards for a master bedroom, especially finding the bedhead feature wall unsophisticated for such a space. Bianca and Carla also scored 22.5/30.
Hayden and Sara's Apartment 3 initially faced uncertainty regarding their continuation in the competition due to prior criticism. After a crucial meeting with Shaynna Blaze and implementing her design advice, Hayden's craftsmanship and Sara's balanced styling resulted in an elegant and dreamy master bedroom. Both Shaynna and the other judges recognized their significant improvement and successful execution of the design brief. Alisa and Lysandra deemed Hayden and Sara's master bedroom the clear winner, highlighting its luxurious, balanced, and sophisticated ambiance, particularly appreciating the dark color palette. Their only critique was the 'pedestrian' artwork, which lacked the sophistication of the rest of the room. Hayden and Sara emerged as winners for the week with a score of 26.5/30. They also discussed their continued commitment to an Art Deco style for their property.
