Best Bedroom Design Awards 2023 Winner | 417 Home
The article highlights the winning bedroom design in the 2023 Design Awards, executed by Fernanda Edwards, lead interior designer at GMI Design Group. The project focused on transforming a primary bedroom that had not been updated since the 1980s, described by the homeowners as "dated" and "dark," into a spacious, relaxing, and modern-eclectic retreat. The primary goal was to brighten and modernize the room while reconfiguring the furniture layout to incorporate a lounge area.
Edwards addressed the lack of natural light by increasing the window size from four feet to five and a half feet, which immediately made the room feel more open. To further enhance brightness, warm off-white paint was chosen for the walls and greige carpeting was installed, both selected for their ability to reflect natural light. In contrast, the ceiling tray was painted charcoal, creating visual depth and a striking contrast with a gold "fandelier," a ceiling fan designed to resemble a chandelier.
A significant challenge involved reconfiguring the room's layout. Originally, one wall was the only viable option for placing the bed. Edwards ingeniously modified the closet layout, freeing up wall space to relocate the bed. This strategic change allowed for the inclusion of a full-sized sofa and coffee table, creating a distinct lounge area without expanding the room's footprint. The designer aimed for a timeless aesthetic while incorporating "pops of color." She established a neutral palette with permanent fixtures like carpeting and light fixtures, then introduced vibrant hues through other design elements. For example, a bed frame upholstered in velvet mustard yellow fabric was selected, which also complemented the gold accents present in the room.
To enhance the room's sanctuary-like feel, a new fireplace was installed, featuring a marble-looking façade crafted from large-scale porcelain tile. This addition not only contributed to the room's warmth and mood but also provided an ideal spot to mount a TV above the mantel. The overall design successfully converted a formerly dark and outdated space into a bright, modern, and highly functional primary bedroom that serves as a relaxing retreat. The article concludes by listing the resources used for various elements of the design, including carpet, artwork, window coverings, furniture, light fixtures, fireplace tile, and paint.
