The's Block's "most beautiful" master bedroom revealed
The Block 2021 competition intensifies as teams tackle the master bedroom and walk-in-robe reveals. This week's challenge involved creating spacious and luxurious master suites, pushing teams to innovate with design, styling, and architectural modifications. The judges, Shaynna Blaze, Darren Palmer, and Neale Whittaker, evaluated each room based on layout, luxury, and functionality, leading to a closely contested finish.
Ronnie and Georgia's House 1 presented a 'spiritual space' with impressive six-metre high raked ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows. Georgia's use of scalloped wall lining behind the bedhead and a subtle color palette impressed the judges, particularly Neale, who called it 'sophisticated subtlety.' While the master bedroom was lauded as one of the most beautiful on The Block in 11 years, the walk-in-robe disappointed due to its small size, deemed 'miniscule' and 'planning gone wrong' by Shaynna. Despite the walk-in-robe's shortcomings, the overall aesthetic coherence and beautiful palette earned them a score of 23.5.
Mitch and Mark in House 2, known for their style, managed to stay ahead of schedule, hosting a winners' dinner early in the week. They opted for a cosy, smaller space with a sage green custom bedhead and effectively used a mirror in the walk-in-robe to create an illusion of greater size. Neale observed that the master bedroom felt a 'little on the tight size' but praised its 'pared back elegance.' Darren appreciated the high ceiling and raked skylight, noting the architectural details that added interest. The walk-in-robe was a success, described as 'tardis-like' and 'classic Mitch and Mark,' contributing to their high score of 26.5, placing them second.
Tanya and Vito from House 3 faced setbacks but delivered a room that impressed with its size and styling. Shaynna highlighted their choice of wallpaper and a smokey blue velvet bedhead with integrated lights, complemented by matching bedside tables. Neale, however, suggested darker flooring for better contrast with the wardrobes. While the layout and overall size of the bedroom were deemed 'just right' and provided ample wardrobe space, the styling of the walk-in-robe fell short. Neale criticized the white doors and black handles as 'ordinary and pokey,' suggesting poor planning for the ensuite, leading to a score of 24.
Luke and Josh in House 4 made a significant architectural decision by converting their planned garage into a master suite, transforming their three-bedroom house into a four-bedroom property. This bold move earned them the top spot for the week. The judges admired their 'architectural thinking,' especially the pitched roof with deep skylights. The styling, with soft blue and navy bed linen, received praise from Darren for its beautiful proportions and private feel. Shaynna noted the stunning outcome, particularly given the space's original purpose. The glamorous walk-in-robe with glass doors and patterned wallpaper was a highlight, giving them a score of 27 and the win.
Kirsty and Jesse in House 5 built their master bedroom from the ground up, with Jesse actively involved in construction. Despite their extensive efforts, Neale found some individual choices, such as the 'clunky furniture pieces,' to be lacking, though he acknowledged the room's overall 'spacious, roomy, bright' qualities. Shaynna appreciated the wainscoting detail. The walk-in-robe, while aesthetically pleasing with shaker profiling and brass handles, was functionally restrictive due to its narrowness, preventing simultaneous opening of doors and drawers. This design flaw, reminiscent of a past season's mistake, earned them the lowest score of 23.
The leader board saw Mitch and Mark at the top with 77 points, followed by Ronnie and Georgia with 74.5, Tanya and Vito and Josh and Luke tied at 71.5, and Kirsty and Jesse with 70. The upcoming week will focus on basements, a new addition to The Block, which is expected to level the playing field. However, a potential cheating scandal involving Josh and Luke's knowledge of the production schedule may create further tension among the teams.
