Day 311: Bathroom Barn Doors
The author discusses the installation of glammed-up sliding barn doors in the bathrooms of The Lodge, aiming to infuse a touch of whimsy and acknowledge the rural setting of a working cattle ranch. The primary challenge encountered during this project was sourcing the appropriate track hardware for the sliding doors. Initial searches on high-end design websites revealed exorbitant prices, while standard hardware magazines offered no suitable interior barn door tracks. Faced with this dilemma, the author enlisted the help of Jerry, the contractor, who successfully located and ordered the necessary hardware within two hours.
The chosen location for these sliding barn doors is in the hallway, adjacent to the bedroom doors. This design choice offers a practical benefit by eliminating the need for traditional swinging doors, which can obstruct pathways. Instead, the barn doors smoothly slide open and closed, optimizing space and accessibility within the Lodge's bathroom areas. The installation process is not yet complete, as the doors still require staining to match the aesthetic of the interior, and handles need to be affixed to the exterior.
A specific consideration for the door design involves the handles. Traditional handles cannot be installed on the interior side of the doors because they would collide with the door jamb when the doors are opened, preventing full functionality. To address this, the plan is to incorporate heavy hook-and-eye closures on the interior side for privacy and security. Additionally, some form of finger pull will be necessary to facilitate opening and closing the doors from the inside, ensuring ease of use despite the handle limitation. These minute details, often overlooked in the initial planning stages, are highlighted as typical examples of the countless small decisions and adjustments that arise during a large-scale construction or renovation project, underscoring the complexity and demands of such undertakings.
