Spec Home No. 07 | Powder, Laundry, And Mudroom
This article highlights the design philosophy and execution for the powder bathroom, laundry room, and mudroom in Spec Home No. 07, emphasizing the blend of function and beauty. The designer, Shea McGee, details how even utility spaces can be elevated to the same aesthetic standard as the rest of a home. The tour begins in a long, narrow hallway, where design was enhanced by partitioning sections and strategically placing artwork to be viewed from multiple angles. This approach demonstrates how transitional spaces are considered opportunities for design elevation.
For the powder bathroom, described as a "little jewel box," the focal point is the Marigold Umber Wallpaper from the Morris & Co. x McGee & Co. collection. This bold pattern serves as the primary statement in the room. Complementing the wallpaper is a custom floating vanity with a smooth, oak wrap and curved edges. It is topped with Calacatta marble, featuring a custom curved backsplash and unlacquered brass hardware from Kallista. The Josephine Mirror from McGee & Co., with its antiqued bronze finish and subtle curvature, is chosen to harmonize with the backsplash, illustrating a deliberate attention to connecting design elements. The ceiling and trim are painted in Ivory Lace by Sherwin-Williams, creating a cohesive and sophisticated palette.
Moving to the laundry room, the flooring immediately captures attention with a checkerboard pattern of Calacatta marble and limestone tiles. This design choice aims to move beyond common grey, white, or black and white tile trends, introducing a fresh yet classic look. The walls are adorned with beadboard finished in Natural Tan by Sherwin-Williams, while the cabinetry features a darker shade, Sand Beach by Sherwin-Williams. Small details contribute significantly to the room's refined appearance, including black stone countertops extending up as a backsplash and burnished brass cupboard latches from Rejuvenation. Exposed shelving is enhanced with curved brackets, adding sophistication. An asymmetrical window provides a perfect spot for art, showcasing "Shadowed Shore 1" from McGee & Co. A traditional touch is incorporated underneath the farmhouse sink with a curtain, tapping into a current trend for nostalgic elements. The designer suggests that laundry rooms are ideal spaces for bold and custom design choices.
Finally, the mudroom is presented with its walls painted in Forestwood by Sherwin-Williams, a beautiful green shade that Shea McGee describes as organic and natural, complementing the outdoor scenery visible through a wall of windows. The same limestone flooring used in the home's entryway extends into this space, maintaining consistency. The McGee & Co. Hopper Indoor/Outdoor Rug, with its green-blue undertones, is chosen to coordinate with the cabinetry. A Cesta Linear Chandelier from McGee & Co. adds elegance and reinforces the elongated shape of the room. Tall cabinets are fitted with long drawer pulls from Rejuvenation, selected for their appropriate scale and practicality in a high-traffic area. The cabinetry design balances closed and open storage, with specific consideration given to client needs for locker space, demonstrating a functional yet aesthetic approach to mudroom design.
