The Block 2024 Hallway Reveals
This article discusses the challenges and outcomes of "hell week" on the reality television show "The Block 2024," where contestants were tasked with completing their hallways, rumpus rooms, and offices while also preparing for the annual Domain Buyers Jury event. With only 32 hours to complete their hallways and make their homes presentable for real estate heavyweights like Danny Wallis and Adrian Portelli, the pressure was intense. A $10,000 prize awaited the best hallway, while the house garnering the most votes from the Domain Buyers Jury would receive an additional $50,000. The judging panel consisted of Scotty, Shelley, and regular judge Neale Whitaker.
Maddy and Charlotte from House 1, despite low confidence, completed their zig-zag hallway and linen cupboard. Neale Whitaker commented on its good execution but noted a lack of excitement, suggesting more artwork and a mirror to enhance the space. Their hallway featured a statement artwork by Emma Stenhouse and a recycled teak Safara Bench Seat.
Courtney and Grant from House 2 were declared the winners, receiving the $10,000 prize. Their hallway showcased signature curved details and a luxurious feel, incorporating a small sitting area with boucle armchairs and a circular rug. Neale praised their effective use of space and attention to detail, highlighting the high-quality plaster and paintwork. The stone wall sconces from Beacon Lighting and a round side table with a marble base were particularly admired.
Ricky and Haydn from House 3, facing a challenging week with the longest hallway at eight meters, managed to finish on time. They were the only team to include a walk-in linen cupboard, which was lauded by Scotty and Neale for its clever use of space. Sun tunnels illuminated the VJ panelling, which Neale appreciated for adding interest. However, the yellow doors were criticized by all judges for resembling primer.
Kylie and Brad from House 4, despite a recent win, experienced communication difficulties during "hell week." They designed their hallway as a kids' breakout space, which Neale found an unusual use of a hallway, making it feel more like a room to pass through. He described the space as "messy" and expressed concerns about their choice of a predominantly black color palette, particularly for the doors, anticipating it would make the area dark. Beige bean bags were also present in their design, with a curved timber TV cabinet and a teal rug from The Block Shop.
Kristian and Mimi from House 5 faced an especially tough week, needing to complete two hallways and a stairwell. They were unable to finish on time, a common occurrence during "hell week." Despite this, Neale sympathized with their predicament, acknowledging the visible strain Kristian was under and expressing confidence that their unfinished space would ultimately look "bloody amazing" given the details already in place.
