Chet Architecture and Ghislaine Viñas Transform a Quirky Fixer-Upper into a Stately Abode

The rehabilitation and modernization of an 1895 estate, shared by architect Chet Callahan and investor Jacinto Hernandez, along with their two sons, involved a detailed collaboration between Callahan’s team and interior designer Ghislaine Viñas. The objective was to convert the historically neglected property, which showcased a mix of stylistic influences including quasi-Craftsman and Spanish, into a vibrant family home. The structure had suffered from decades of disrepair, necessitating the use of historical photographs to accurately reconstruct its original architectural details. Key to the renovation was addressing the home’s awkward interior layouts. These were opened up to create more fluid spaces, and a significant glass-box addition was integrated into one side of the house. This addition was strategically designed to enhance natural light penetration, thereby counteracting the previously gloomy atmosphere of the residence. In addition to restoring historical elements, Callahan and Viñas introduced contemporary interventions, such as a spiral staircase, which itself received a Best of Year Award. Callahan articulated the design philosophy, stating that the aim was for the space to convey the impression of having been continuously inhabited and thoughtfully curated by a tasteful gentleman over its 125-year history. This involved accumulating artifacts and making expert additions over time. Viñas, aligning with this vision, employed a diverse array of furnishings and decorative elements, intentionally blending items from different eras and genres. She emphasized that the house is imbued with personal selections that narrate meaningful stories. An example includes custom-designed rugs, one of which draws inspiration from an Alexander Calder sculpture, reflecting a connection to Hernandez's workplace. Central to the home’s aesthetic is the homeowners’ extensive contemporary art collection, with Viñas also providing guidance on new acquisitions. The kitchen features a distinctive mixed-media installation by Brett Murray, which is described as expressing a core belief embraced by the couple within their newly reconceived living space. This transformation highlights a successful blend of historical respect and modern design, creating a unique and personalized environment. #ChetArchitecture #GhislaineVinas #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #HistoricBuilding #ContemporaryArt #SpiralStaircase #CustomRugs #FixerUpper #ChetArchitecture #GhislaineVinas #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #HistoricBuilding #ContemporaryArt #SpiralStaircase #CustomRugs #FixerUpper
