How This Homeowner Transformed A 3-Room HDB Into A Japanese Zen Home With A Secret Garden

This article highlights the transformation of a 700 sqft three-room HDB flat in the Bugis area into a Japanese Zen home. The design concept centers around the principles of 'movement and stillness' (动静), aiming to create a harmonious blend of functionality and tranquility within a compact space. The homeowner's vision resulted in a multi-purpose living environment where every element contributes to both aesthetic appeal and practical use. The interior design features dark wood paneling and textured walls that establish a cohesive visual language throughout the apartment. This consistent material palette contributes to a calming atmosphere while also defining different zones within the open-plan layout. The living area, for instance, is thoughtfully separated from the workspace, which includes a cantilevered table designed to create a 'floating' desk effect, offering views of the neighborhood. To enhance spatial dynamics and balance openness with privacy, the design incorporates open shelves, louvre doors, and strategic partitions. These elements allow for flexibility in how the space is used and perceived, preventing it from feeling cramped despite its modest size. The kitchen area has been re-envisioned as a pantry and display gallery, characterized by concrete flooring and countertops. A distinctive basin serves as a focal point, adding a touch of unique design to this functional space. A key feature of the home is the versatile tatami area, which can be adapted for various purposes, from a daytime relaxation zone to an evening sleeping space. The integration of art pieces, plants, and a fish tank further enriches the living environment, fostering a deeper connection with nature and allowing the space to evolve over time. The bathroom adopts an open-concept design, featuring an onsen bathtub that provides city views while bathing. This bold design choice blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor, enhancing the sense of spaciousness and luxury. A fusuma screen, adorned with artistic elements, acts as a flexible barrier, embodying philosophical themes and offering both privacy and an artistic focal point. The study, positioned as a quiet core, houses a library, creating a dedicated space for reflection and reconnection. Glass panels and strategically placed mirrors contribute to the home's harmonious flow, creating visual connections between rooms. Complementing the interior is a Japanese rock garden and a deer-scarer water feature, both designed to amplify the calming and meditative qualities of the Zen aesthetic. These outdoor elements extend the serene ambiance of the interior, creating a tranquil oasis within the urban setting. The homeowner describes living in this transformed space as a journey of embracing imperfections and discovering new possibilities, emphasizing the adaptability and continuous learning fostered by the unique design. #HomeTour #JapaneseZenDesign #HDBFlat #SmallSpaceLiving #MinimalistInterior #Bugis #OnsenBath #InteriorDesign #SpaceTransformation #HomeTour #JapaneseZenDesign #HDBFlat #SmallSpaceLiving #MinimalistInterior #Bugis #OnsenBath #InteriorDesign #SpaceTransformation
