Thesis Project: Urban Roots

This project focuses on the renovation of the Temple Building, a historic structure built in 1917 in Old Town, Lansing, which is currently in a state of disrepair. The building suffers from issues related to accessibility, material degradation, and overall aesthetic concerns. The primary goal of this renovation is to address these problems and revitalize the building, transforming it into a vibrant hub for the local community. The redesigned Temple Building aims to offer an authentic dining and shopping experience, providing Lansing residents with access to locally sourced foods and a restaurant that serves organic and wholesome meals. This initiative seeks to promote healthy lifestyles within the community while also stimulating local engagement. Central to the renovation's approach is sustainability, which involves the reuse and highlighting of existing infrastructure and original materials. This strategy not only preserves the historical significance of the building but also encourages local residents to develop a renewed appreciation for historic Old Town. The design concept is inspired by the interplay between urban and rural environments. The revamped Temple Building will offer the conveniences of urban Lansing alongside the health-focused attributes often associated with rural areas. The design incorporates highly textured building materials already present in the structure, representing the rural element, which will be juxtaposed with modern furnishings and material selections to create a dynamic and engaging interior. A muted and neutral color scheme will serve as a subtle backdrop, ensuring that the food remains the focal point of the space. The proposed revitalization of the Temple Building is envisioned as a new restaurant and market that will provide the surrounding community with access to the health benefits of fresh, local food. By establishing a venue where local vendors can sell their produce and offering a restaurant that celebrates this local fare, the building will foster community engagement and facilitate healthier lifestyle choices among residents. Furthermore, the rejuvenation of this building is expected to create a significant destination in Old Town, Lansing, thereby contributing to the growth and prosperity of both the surrounding rural and urban areas. #UrbanRoots #HistoricPreservation #SustainableDesign #CommunityDevelopment #LocalFood #InteriorDesign #LansingRevitalization #AdaptiveReuse #StudentProjects #UrbanRoots #HistoricPreservation #SustainableDesign #CommunityDevelopment #LocalFood #InteriorDesign #LansingRevitalization #AdaptiveReuse #StudentProjects
