Should you put a TV above the mantelpiece? Experts all agree on this newly sparked debate

The placement of a television in a living room, particularly whether it should be positioned above a mantelpiece, has become a subject of considerable debate, especially following comments from designer Jenna Lyons. Lyons, a star of RHONY, expressed a strong preference against placing TVs over mantels unless in a dedicated TV room, advocating for them to be hidden or avoiding the popular 'Frame TV' aesthetic that mimics artwork. This perspective has ignited an online discussion, with some criticizing her stance as reflecting 'rich privilege' given that many households lack the space for a separate TV room. Several interior experts, however, offer a more nuanced view, largely disagreeing with Lyons's categorical rejection of mantel-mounted televisions. Victoria Foster, an interior stylist at ScS, highlights that not everyone has the luxury of a dedicated TV room, and with the prevalence of open-plan living, formal living rooms are becoming less common. She emphasizes that functionality is key in living spaces, especially if the TV is frequently used. Foster argues that if a significant amount of time is spent watching television in the living room, it doesn't need to be hidden away. Ultimately, TV placement should align with personal preference, room layout, and how furniture is arranged, often centering around the television. Interior designer Tara Rodrigues echoes this sentiment, stating there's no one-size-fits-all solution for TV placement. She notes that positioning a TV above a fireplace is a common and often necessary option for maximizing space and creating a focal point in a room, particularly when other legitimate options are limited. The experts suggest that while Jenna Lyons's opinion is noteworthy, it doesn't fully account for the practical realities and diverse living arrangements of many homeowners. If the decision is made to place the TV above the fireplace, certain considerations are crucial. Safety is a primary concern, particularly regarding heat. Joanna Humphreys, a fire & stove specialist at Direct Fireplaces, explains that while modern electric media wall fires have relatively low heat output, ensuring proper ventilation for the TV is essential. Heat rises, and prolonged exposure to excessive heat can damage electronics. A practical solution involves installing a shelf or mantel between the TV and the fireplace to create a buffer zone and deflect heat. Another safety aspect involves the TV mount. Tara Rodrigues advises ensuring the mount is secure and stable, designed to safely hold the TV's weight. Joanna Humphreys further recommends selecting a mount specifically designed for the TV's size, suggesting a flat or flush mount for a sleek appearance, provided access behind the TV isn't frequently required. These precautions help prevent accidents and ensure the longevity of the television. Beyond safety, ensuring a comfortable viewing experience is paramount. Experts caution against mounting the TV too high, as this can lead to viewer neck strain, especially during extended viewing sessions. The ideal height, according to Joanna Humphreys, is one where the center of the screen is at eye level when seated. This ensures ergonomic comfort and an enjoyable viewing experience. Despite the celebrity-driven debate, the consensus among these experts is that placing a TV above a fireplace can be a perfectly acceptable and functional solution, provided safety and comfort guidelines are followed. #TelevisionPlacement #LivingRoomDesign #FireplaceDecor #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #DesignDebate #JennaLyons #TVMounting #Ergonomics #TelevisionPlacement #LivingRoomDesign #FireplaceDecor #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #DesignDebate #JennaLyons #TVMounting #Ergonomics
