The design aimed for timeless qualities while maximizing the scenic views of its location in The Strand at Headlands, a private oceanfront community in Dana Point. This site is notable as one of the last undeveloped land parcels along the California coastline, offering intimate views of the headland bluff. The architectural approach prioritized drawing these views throughout the home, from the primary living spaces to the front door. To achieve this, traditional materials were utilized in a contemporary manner to enhance sightlines and foster an open floor plan within the 8,329-square-foot, two-story residence, which also includes a basement level. The exterior features 4-inch horizontal clapboard siding painted white, providing a sharp contrast with exposed steel and metal cladding, as well as natural white oak and brick veneer. A key design element is the gridlike pattern, created through the use of steel and floor-to-ceiling glass panels, which frames both front and rear views and serves as a recurring theme throughout the property. The window and door package necessitated steel to form thin, lacy grid lines, or mullions, which add a delicate detail. These grid lines progressively increase in size as one moves from the front entrance to the great room and primary areas at the rear, where unbroken floor-to-ceiling glass panels are featured. Interior designer Summer Jensen of Hawk & Co extended this grid theme into the five-bedroom, nine-bathroom interior, focusing on the "power of the line" to define space and give meaning to negative areas. The design employs a clean black, white, and nude color scheme, along with an ascending formality concept. The lowest level is envisioned as an extension of the pool deck, or a "beach club," becoming more formal with each rising floor. In 2015, architect Dan Brunn embarked on a unique residential project in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, transforming an empty quarter-acre lot with a brook into an eco-chic, 4,500-square-foot modern dwelling known as Bridge House. The property, situated in a predominantly traditional area, presented a distinct challenge and opportunity for contemporary design. The construction leveraged a prefabricated building system called Bone Structure, a Canadian kit of parts consisting of columns and beams made from 90 percent recycled steel, likened to an Erector Set for adult home construction. This system, combined with infill made of structurally insulated foam topped with spray-on foam, ensured the house achieved net-zero energy consumption. The exterior of Bridge House is clad in panels of knotty grade cedar, providing a natural and refined aesthetic. Access to the property is gained via a rolling entry gate crafted from weathering steel, leading to a courtyard adorned with custom-made pavers. The interior begins with a striking double-height entry and living room, immediately distinguished by a vibrant green wall installed by Habitat Horticulture. Dungeness, known for its unique shingle beach landscape and historical structures, has long captivated architects. Naylor's vision was to convert the old pumping station, originally built to supply fuel to France during the D-Day Landings, into a modern living space while preserving its historical integrity. The station was designed to appear as domestic buildings to avoid enemy detection, an intriguing aspect that attracted Naylor to the property. The original structure is a low-lying, oblong concrete building, engineered to be bomb-proof with 30cm thick walls and a concrete plank roof reinforced with steel beams. It also features a perimeter steel ring made from old railway track, a testament to wartime resourcefulness. After the war, the building served various community functions, including a school, a chapel, and a meeting lodge for the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes until 2009. Naylor aimed to retain as much of the original structure as possible, integrating its inherent qualities into the new design. She recognized the thick concrete walls' potential as a heat store, insulating the building from the outside to allow the walls to absorb and retain heat, effectively functioning as a large storage heater. This approach, combined with modern energy solutions, makes the property highly energy-efficient. To further enhance its energy efficiency, underfloor heating was installed, and hot water is provided by an air-source heat pump. Photovoltaic (solar) panels on the roof generate electricity, and LED lighting is used throughout the interior. These features are crucial for a home located on the exposed and windswept Kent coast.
