Mr. Chow, an entrepreneur in Jinhua City, China’s Zhejiang Province, acquired a spacious 5,381-square-foot four-level home, which, despite its ample balconies and courtyard, suffered from a significant lack of natural light. To address this, he commissioned Liang Architecture Studio for a comprehensive renovation, completed in December 2019. The core of the renovation involved transforming the home’s central space. The design team removed the second and third-level floor slabs in the foyer, creating a dramatic, voluminous atrium that extends from the basement to the roof. This open core now serves as the central focal point of the residence, significantly improving light penetration. Structural beams within this soaring space were deliberately retained to honor the building’s history, while footbridges on the second and third levels connect the two sides of the building, maintaining continuity and flow across the expanded void. The design prioritizes longevity and environmental suitability, utilizing a selection of locally sourced and sustainable materials. These include stone, pine wood, concrete, steel, and bricks, chosen for their durability and regional relevance. The villa's location on a low 'taluy' river bank necessitated specific construction measures to prevent environmental impact and mitigate risks such as landslides and rock displacement during heavy rainfall. To address this, stone steps were integrated into the design, forming a natural retaining wall that both preserves the landscape and protects the residence. The structural composition of the villa comprises three main volumetric blocks: two distinct units with pitched roofs and a central, lower connecting section that forms the ground floor. A cascading water feature runs along the stepped entry court and surrounds the elevated living room, enhancing the illusion of a floating structure. The house is also Vastu compliant; however, the expansive 3.5-acre site allowed for the integration of Vastu principles without compromising the architectural design. A dedicated block of four rooms accommodates the household staff. Despite its open aesthetic, the bungalow is designed to ensure privacy. Formal areas are situated on the ground floor, limiting thoroughfare and services to this level. All bedrooms are located on the first floor, offering superior views compared to the ground-level areas that are flush with the lawns. The bedrooms are designed as suites, complete with dressing rooms and en suite bathrooms, and are accessed via a gallery running along the internal courtyard. Each bedroom features an entire wall as a window, providing views of the lush surroundings. However, poor cross-ventilation necessitated a complete interior overhaul, leading to the removal of internal walls and false ceilings. The redesign focused on aligning the space with the architects' lifestyle and preferences. On the ground floor, the renovation aimed to create a unified living area by introducing a double-height courtyard featuring a skylight. A five-meter-long white counter island was integrated as a central horizontal element, providing balance to the verticality of the courtyard. This deliberate arrangement of elements around the courtyard was intended to foster communication between distinct spaces, imbuing the void with a subtle, unspoken message. For the second level, the master bedroom and bathroom were relocated to enhance connectivity. The master bedroom, originally having only a small window, posed a challenge regarding potential claustrophobia.
