Watch a live talk on biophilic design and sustainable materials with Oliver Heath

Dezeen and surface brand CDUK collaborated to host a live discussion with designer Oliver Heath, focusing on the principles of biophilic design and the critical importance of incorporating sustainable materials into interior spaces. The conversation, moderated by Dezeen's founder and editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs, marked the second in-person talk streamed from Dezeen's new Studio Space in London. Oliver Heath, an architectural and interior designer, leads his eponymous practice, Oliver Heath Design, which specializes in biophilic design projects aimed at enhancing health and wellbeing. His work spans various environments, including homes, workplaces, and healthcare and leisure facilities, serving notable clients like Apple, Bloomberg, Booking.com, Deutsche Bank, and Interface. Heath's presentation delved into how biophilic design, by integrating natural elements and processes into built environments, can positively influence human health and overall wellbeing. This design philosophy is increasingly recognized for its potential to reduce stress, improve cognitive function, and foster a stronger connection to nature within daily living and working spaces. The discussion also highlighted the role of sustainable materials in this context. Using materials that are environmentally responsible not only minimizes the ecological footprint of design and construction but also contributes to creating interiors that evoke a sense of natural comfort and authenticity. Such materials can promote a deeper connection to the natural world, aligning with the core tenets of biophilic design. The event coincided with the introduction of PaperStone, a recycled paper composite surface material, distributed in the UK and Ireland by CDUK. This product exemplifies the kind of innovative, sustainable materials that support biophilic design principles. Heath is also a prominent advocate for sustainable design, having served as a spokesperson for organizations such as the UK’s Department for Energy and Climate Change, the Energy Saving Trust, and the Waste and Resources Action Programme. His expertise extends to media, where he has presented architecture and interior design shows on various television channels, including BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and National Geographic. Furthermore, Heath directs the talks program for Planted, a contemporary design event and digital forum dedicated to re-establishing connections between human spaces and nature. Dezeen previously collaborated with Planted to showcase sustainable design brands and products virtually. The talk underscored the growing imperative for designers and architects to consider both the environmental impact of their material choices and the psychological benefits of integrating natural elements into their projects. The dialogue emphasized that effective design goes beyond aesthetics, encompassing the holistic health of individuals and the planet. By championing biophilic design and sustainable materials, the event aimed to inspire a more thoughtful and responsible approach to creating environments that are both beautiful and beneficial. #BiophilicDesign #SustainableMaterials #OliverHeath #CDUK #InteriorDesign #HealthAndWellbeing #EnvironmentalDesign #DesignTalks #PaperStone #BiophilicDesign #SustainableMaterials #OliverHeath #CDUK #InteriorDesign #HealthAndWellbeing #EnvironmentalDesign #DesignTalks #PaperStone
