Step Into The Future At This Sleek Chrome Office
The article showcases the innovative office design for Shanghai Transaction Succeed, a financial investment company, created by One House Design, led by founder and chief designer Lei Fang. Located on the banks of Shanghai's Huangpu River, the 21,500-square-foot office on the top floor of a four-story building in Yuejie Expo Park, draws inspiration from futuristic, digital worlds, and even the client's affinity for Star Wars. Key themes for the design include technology, future, and diversity, aiming to create a wonder-filled encounter between people and space, and work and life. The project is Fang's third for this client, extending a minimalist aesthetic and restrained formal language previously established.
The office, designed for 15 employees, features a mix of private meeting rooms, offices, open-plan desks, and leisure areas including music and banquet rooms, and a fitness area. A recurring design language of curved walls, reflective surfaces, and monochromatic colors contributes to a futuristic, portal-like ambiance, described as a liminal space between the present and an imagined future. Fang likens the organic forms and undulating silhouettes to a 'wormhole,' enhancing the sense of fluidity and seamlessness throughout the space. Upon entry, the reception area instantly conveys a high-tech environment with a high-shine, stainless-steel desk set against a concave, dark-gray curved accent wall, with window openings creating a visual separation from the outside world. This design choice aims to disrupt the conventional workplace aesthetic.
At the core of the office is a distinctive exhibition showcase, enclosed within two stacked, open-square frames inside an oversized glass cylinder. This gallery-like volume displays examples of the core products the company invests in, primarily raw materials for the renewable energy industry. This 'realm within a realm' concept extends its aesthetic influence to the rest of the project, with the curvature of the glass partitions inspiring the curving walls and dividers throughout the office. The blue from the company's logo, screen-printed on the installation, is subtly incorporated into select furnishings and accent walls.
The inspiration for the curves is also deeply rooted in the company's branding, specifically the letter 'D' in its logo. Fang utilized variations of this shape for partitions, window openings, and furniture, associating it with the philosophical concept of 'Dao,' representing the natural order of the universe. This design approach creates a tension between physical and digital existence, where the abstract and seamless qualities reminiscent of the metaverse are achieved through meticulous craftsmanship. Fang used a resin-based artificial stone, which can be heated, curved, and polished to create a 'one-piece' effect, ensuring a fluid and handcrafted artistry that contrasts with the digital aesthetic.
Despite the digital and futuristic aesthetic, the office dedicates significant space to personal interaction, as evidenced by the music room and a lounge area adjacent to the gallery. The music room, featuring a Darth Vader motif and LED strip-embedded aluminum panels, serves as a break-out space, highlighting the client's 'Star Wars' enthusiasm. Ultimately, the design emphasizes that while digital landscapes are increasingly prevalent, the tactile and communal pleasures of a thoughtfully designed physical space remain essential, offering a reminder of the enduring value of in-person experiences.
