Insulating window coating for retrofit

The US Department of Energy indicates that approximately 30% of a home's energy is lost through windows. Traditional window replacement, while effective, can be costly and contributes significantly to embodied carbon. An alternative solution involves applying a low-emissivity coating to existing windows, offering proven energy savings and enhancing occupant well-being. This insulating window coating can be seamlessly applied to any existing glass, regardless of window type, shape, or style. The underlying technology is similar to factory-applied low-emissivity coatings but is designed for retrofitting and often surpasses the performance of some factory-applied options. Compared to low-e films, this insulating coating boasts several advantages, including being twice as durable, not contributing to fire risk, and allowing for a seamless application. The coating effectively reduces heat transmission into homes during warmer months, leading to cooler indoor temperatures without diminishing natural light. Conversely, in winter, it traps heat indoors by blocking specific wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum, thereby decreasing the energy required for heating. While the solution does reduce the g-factor (from about 0.85 to 0.68 for a single-glazed window), which means less solar gain in winter, this is offset by a significant improvement in retaining paid heat. According to Window Insulation, the benefits of this energy-saving alternative to expensive window replacements are substantial. These include an improved U-value for existing glass, as demonstrated by testing at Nottingham Trent University, which showed a reduction of 1.09 W/m²K, from 2.63 W/m²K to 1.54 W/m²K. The coating is most impactful on lower-performing windows, though a recent study at Liverpool John Moore’s University indicated an improvement from 1.2 W/m²K to 1.1 W/m²K on modern windows. Overall, the solution offers a 20-40% improvement in thermal resistance, leading to reduced energy consumption. Additional advantages include blocking 99% of harmful ultraviolet light and 83% of infrared light, along with a 50% reduction in condensation, which mitigates mold growth. The coating has minimal impact on visible light transmission and contributes to a reduction in overheating. These factors collectively lead to increased occupant well-being, healthier indoor environments, reduced risk of skin and eye damage, and protection for furnishings. The solution is designed to be maintenance-free for 20 years and does not significantly alter the appearance of the windows. Its scalability is facilitated by a drop-shipping product distribution model, ensuring access to large material volumes, although this does increase transport emissions. The company, Window Insulation, confirms UK availability, and the product has been successfully installed in over 37 countries across two decades, typically offering a return on investment within 1-2 years and a 10-year warranty, with heating/cooling cost savings ranging from 20-30%. #WindowInsulation #HomeRetrofit #EnergyEfficiency #ClimateChangeAdaptation #ThermalPerformance #SustainableBuilding #GreenTechnology #BuiltEnvironment #CarbonReduction #WindowInsulation #HomeRetrofit #EnergyEfficiency #ClimateChangeAdaptation #ThermalPerformance #SustainableBuilding #GreenTechnology #BuiltEnvironment #CarbonReduction
