8 budget fixes for drafty windows — including a $2.99 beauty product I use every single day

Drafty windows are a common issue that can lead to increased energy bills and discomfort due to cold air entering the home. This problem often arises from old fittings that crack and deteriorate over time, a normal aspect of wear and tear, rather than solely old windows. While replacing windows can be an effective long-term solution, it is often expensive and not feasible for everyone, especially renters. Fortunately, several budget-friendly, quick fixes can significantly reduce drafts without the need for full window replacement. One effective method is adding weatherstripping, which is available in compression, foam, and V-type varieties. Compression weatherstrips are ideal for sealing window sashes, while V-type weatherstrips prevent cold air from entering through window jams. Foam weatherstrips are easy to install but less durable. Choosing high-quality weatherstripping ensures a lasting seal. Pairing this with a suitable window weather sealing tape enhances the barrier against drafts. Layering window dressings is another practical solution. Combining sheer curtains, blinds, and heavy drapes provides robust protection against external temperatures. Insulating curtains with thermal linings are particularly effective, blocking cold air while maintaining aesthetic appeal. For maximum efficacy, curtains should be floor-length and wide enough to fully cover window frames. Caulking is a straightforward way to fill gaps between window sashes and frames, also helping to prevent condensation. It involves scraping off old caulk or paint, then applying a flexible, waterproof silicone caulk in a continuous line. This process is crucial for sealing any existing openings around windows and doors. Refreshing glazing putty addresses cracked seals, which can compromise window efficiency. This DIY task requires a heat gun, putty knife, caulk, glazing putty, and a utility knife. Old putty is carefully removed after heating, and new putty is applied according to manufacturer instructions, with glazing points used to secure the glass during drying. Surprisingly, clear nail polish can seal small gaps around window frames and sashes, offering a nearly unnoticeable fix once dry. This inexpensive beauty product provides a quick, temporary solution for minor drafts. Applying shrink film creates a protective barrier for windows, especially beneficial during winter. This involves cleaning the window and frame, measuring and cutting the film, then applying it with double-sided tape and using a hairdryer to heat-shrink it for a smooth, airtight finish. While removable, the tape might lift paint if the frame is not in good condition. Professional installation of window film offers a more permanent solution, mimicking the benefits of low-E coatings found in new windows by reflecting heat and light. Foam tape serves as an alternative to weatherstripping, particularly suitable for curved windows. It is cut to size and applied to cover gaps, providing a quick way to weatherproof. Lastly, bubble wrap can offer immediate insulation, especially when warmth is urgently needed. This involves misting clean window panes with water and pressing the bubble side of the wrap against the damp glass. While effective, it obstructs the view and adhesive tape used to secure it can damage paint upon removal. For homeowners seeking a permanent resolution, investing in new windows or installing secondary glazing remains the most comprehensive approach, potentially leading to long-term energy savings. #DraftyWindows #HomeInsulation #DIYHomeImprovement #EnergyEfficiency #WindowSealing #Weatherstripping #Caulking #WindowTreatments #BudgetFriendlyFixes #DraftyWindows #HomeInsulation #DIYHomeImprovement #EnergyEfficiency #WindowSealing #Weatherstripping #Caulking #WindowTreatments #BudgetFriendlyFixes
