The $54 Frost Fix That Stops Drafty Windows – and Looks Great

Windows are a common source of heat loss in homes during winter, often allowing cold air to leak in and forcing heating systems to work harder. While traditional solutions like weatherstripping and insulating films exist, more aesthetically pleasing and effective methods are available. One such method involves layering blinds, specifically thermal Roman shades, with curtains to create a double barrier against cold air transfer. This approach is not only highly effective but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of a room. Thermal Roman shades, such as those available from Wayfair for around $54.99, offer several benefits. They are available in various sizes and colors, crafted from polyester, and designed to reduce outside noise while minimizing energy loss through windows. Their cordless design ensures easy and safe adjustment. Unlike temporary thermal window films, thermal blinds offer a more permanent and integrated solution that contributes to making a home feel like a sanctuary rather than a cold, uninviting space. Layering these blinds with thermal curtains provides an additional insulating layer, softening the room's decor and acting as an effective draft deterrent. According to Jordan Benjamin, president at Done Rite Services, this layering technique functions similarly to wearing layers of clothing, trapping small pockets of air to provide insulation and limit heat loss. For optimal performance, the blind should be installed as close to the window as possible, maintaining a one-inch gap to prevent moisture buildup and potential mold growth. The effectiveness of this method depends on selecting the right materials and ensuring a snug fit. Dan Simpson, owner at Air Treatment Company, emphasizes that while blinds alone can reduce air transfer and improve heating efficiency, curtains layered over them further restrict air movement between the window and the room. This combined approach significantly reduces heat loss, allowing furnaces or heat pumps to maintain stable indoor temperatures with less effort. When choosing window treatments, cellular or honeycomb-style blinds are recommended due to their air-pocket design, which provides measurable insulation. Energy-efficient options like cordless cellular shades from The Home Depot or honeycomb shades from SelectBlinds are good choices. For those on a budget, basic roller blackout blinds from retailers like Walmart or IKEA can still be effective when paired with thick curtains, provided they fit snugly to minimize gaps. Trim-at-home shades from Amazon offer another convenient option. Thermal blinds are also more practical than full curtains from an HVAC perspective, as they do not interfere with airflow from vents, radiators, or baseboard heaters located below windows. They are easy to adjust, allowing homeowners to let in radiant warmth during sunny hours and close them at dusk to trap heat. In addition to layering window treatments, other interior design strategies can help keep a home warm, such as incorporating throws, bedding, and rugs to block drafts and enhance insulation. Products like Gorilla Waterproof Caulk & Seal Silicone Sealant and Duck Brand Black Foam Weatherstrip Seal can be used to seal gaps around windows and doors, providing additional draft protection. Furthermore, Frost King Indoor Shrink Window Kits offer an affordable, temporary seasonal solution by creating a thermal barrier on window panes. These measures collectively contribute to a warmer, more energy-efficient home during colder months. #HomeHeating #WindowTreatments #DraftProofing #EnergyEfficiency #InteriorDesign #ThermalBlinds #CurtainHacks #WinterPreparation #HomeInsulation #HomeHeating #WindowTreatments #DraftProofing #EnergyEfficiency #InteriorDesign #ThermalBlinds #CurtainHacks #WinterPreparation #HomeInsulation
