Insulation grants UK: do you qualify for free insulation?

This article provides an overview of insulation grants and free insulation offers available in the UK, focusing on how they can help homeowners save money on energy bills by making their homes more energy-efficient. It explains that some energy companies offer free insulation or grants as part of the government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) Scheme. The article highlights potential annual savings on energy bills from different types of insulation, such as loft, floor, and cavity wall insulation, citing figures from the Energy Saving Trust based on July 2025 energy prices. For instance, loft insulation from 0mm to 270mm could save between £210 and £390 annually, while cavity wall insulation could save £120 to £420 a year. A key section addresses concerns about government insulation schemes, detailing issues identified by the National Audit Office (NAO) in October 2025. The NAO reported that 98% of homes with external wall insulation installed under the ECO4 and Great British Insulation Schemes between 2022 and early 2025 experienced problems, including damp and mould, due to an ‘under-skilled workforce,’ corner-cutting by businesses, and unclear standards. The government has committed to fixing these issues at no cost to consumers, and Ofgem has initiated contact with affected properties, providing guidance on how to proceed. Homeowners who haven't received a letter but suspect they are affected are advised to contact Ofgem directly. The article also includes advice from Lisa Webb, a consumer law expert, warning against scammers and emphasizing the importance of verifying communications through the Unique Measure Reference. For those not eligible for grants, the article discusses various payment options for insulation. Simple tasks like draught-proofing and basic loft insulation can be done relatively cheaply, often by the homeowner. More extensive projects, such as cavity wall insulation or external solid wall insulation, can range from approximately £1,100 to £11,000. It suggests financing options like 0% balance transfer credit cards or increasing a mortgage for larger home improvements. The article then details specific offers from several energy suppliers under the ECO scheme. British Gas previously offered insulation but is no longer accepting new applicants for the scheme, citing lead times for completion. EDF Energy offers loft, wall, and floor insulation or heating system upgrades to eligible customers with an EPC rating of E or below and who receive qualifying benefits. E.ON Next provides grants of up to £500 for loft insulation, available to homeowners or private renters with an EPC rating between D and G, regardless of whether they are E.ON Next customers, based on income or benefit receipt. Octopus Energy offers cavity wall, loft, and underfloor heating insulation to its customers receiving qualifying benefits. Ovo Energy provides loft, cavity wall, or floor insulation through the Great British Insulation Scheme and ECO4, targeting homeowners or private tenants with an EPC rating of D or below and certain benefits. Scottish Power offers upgraded insulation, replacement heating systems, or air source heat pumps via ECO4, and in some cases, solar panels, to homeowners with an EPC of D or below or renters with an EPC of E or below who receive specific benefits. Utilita offers energy-efficiency measures like insulation, new boilers, or solar panels to eligible individuals in homes with an EPC rating of D or below (owners) or E or below (renters) who receive certain benefits. Finally, the article advises checking the small print for any insulation offer to confirm eligibility, noting that most deals require at least two-thirds of the loft space to be insulated and exclude properties with over 100mm of existing loft insulation. Eligibility can also be restricted for rented properties, flats, maisonettes, and properties in housing associations or councils. It also mentions that larger or unusual homes might require a partial contribution to the 'free' insulation cost. #InsulationGrants #EnergyEfficiency #HomeImprovements #ECOScheme #GovernmentGrants #EnergyBills #HomeInsulation #EnergySavings #ConsumerAdvice #InsulationGrants #EnergyEfficiency #HomeImprovements #ECOScheme #GovernmentGrants #EnergyBills #HomeInsulation #EnergySavings #ConsumerAdvice
