Upgrade your heating system to reduce bills and energy usage
Making a home more sustainable involves addressing its heating system, which can significantly impact energy consumption and costs. The initial step is to assess the current heating method, which can range from open fires and various types of stoves (wood-burning, gas, multi-fuel) to electric radiators, storage heaters, traditional gas or oil-fired boilers, or modern heat pumps (air, water, or ground source). The Green Hub from An Post offers a free home assessment, in partnership with SSE Airtricity, to help homeowners determine the most suitable heating system upgrades for their specific needs.
Secondary heating sources, such as open fires, are often aesthetically pleasing but highly inefficient. Approximately 80% of the heat from an open fire escapes up the chimney. To mitigate this heat loss, solutions like a fire genie, a galvanized steel draught excluder, can be installed. This device helps retain heat when the fireplace is not in use, effectively sealing the opening. A more substantial upgrade is installing a stove and flue, which can be gas, solid, or multi-fuel. Stoves are considerably more efficient, with about 80% of their heat radiating into the room, making them a valuable secondary heat source. While open fires and stoves can supplement heating, they are typically not sufficient as a primary heat source for an entire home.
For primary heating, heat pumps are a highly recommended renewable option, particularly air-to-water heat pumps. These systems function like large outdoor air-conditioning units, drawing heat from the outside air and transferring it to the home's heating system. They are ideal for new constructions or extensive renovations, working effectively with underfloor heating or low-temperature radiators. For retrofits, existing radiators may need replacement with low-temperature alternatives, though high-temperature heat pumps designed to work with existing radiators are an emerging advancement. Geothermal heat pumps, which utilize the earth's stable temperature, are another option but involve more invasive installation, requiring boreholes or extensive piping underground, making them suitable for homes with ample outdoor space. Heat pumps, while requiring an initial investment, eliminate gas or oil bills, though electricity costs may increase slightly.
If budget constraints prevent the installation of a heat pump, upgrading to a high-efficiency A-rated boiler (around 92% efficient) is a more accessible solution. A review and potential replacement of existing radiators can also significantly improve heating performance. It is important to note that grants are generally not available for non-renewable heating source upgrades like boiler replacements. Water heating can also be made more sustainable by installing solar panels, which can work in conjunction with any primary heating system. The choice of heating system often involves a hybrid approach, combining different technologies to optimize efficiency and comfort based on the home's structure and the homeowner's preferences.
The Green Hub by An Post offers comprehensive support for these upgrades, including free home surveys, project and grant management, and low-rate Green Home Improvement loans. These upgrades, while sometimes invisible, significantly enhance a home's thermal comfort, U-value (insulation characteristics), and Building Energy Rating (BER), leading to a cozier and more cost-effective living environment.
