Step Inside A New York Loft Inspired by American Psycho... Minus the Murder
This article features a New York City loft designed by Michael Ellison, taking inspiration from the aesthetic portrayed in the novel and film "American Psycho," albeit without the violent themes. The client, a businessman from Connecticut, commissioned Ellison to create a conversational and moody pied-à-terre in a former artist's building in Soho. The design significantly departs from a previous traditional Nantucket house Ellison designed for the same client, which featured fifty shades of white, cream, greige, and blue. This new project embraces a darker, more provocative atmosphere.
Ellison's design strategy for the Soho loft involved emphasizing a dramatic and edgy ambiance. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a custom steel "fence" that subtly separates the entryway from the main living area, allowing for a gradual transition while still offering a view into the apartment. The living room is characterized by a textured black wall, which Ellison describes as an "abyss," complemented by oxblood wool curtains. The furniture selection includes a vintage De Sede Snake sofa, a distinctive swinging chaise suspended from the ceiling, and a gallery wall anchored by Vik Muniz's artwork "Amore and Psyche.
In the dining area, a piece by Wayne Pate from Armature Projects is hung from chains, further contributing to the desired "dangerous" aesthetic. Ellison's primary goal was to ensure every element of the interior felt a little provocative and intriguing. Despite the dramatic aesthetic changes, the architectural modifications to the loft were kept minimal. Ellison focused on replacing the existing squeaky floors and upgrading the lighting with fixtures from Apparatus and Galerie Philia, along with a Noguchi paper globe.
The kitchen received a modern update, featuring a waterfall island crafted from Arebescato Orobico marble. The cabinetry is painted in Benjamin Moore's Black Beauty, creating a sophisticated contrast. The designer, Michael Ellison, launched his firm three years prior to this project, having previously served as the design director at Workshop/APD. This project represents an adventurous new chapter for the client, offering a distinctive and bold living space in New York City. For Ellison, the loft demonstrates how even unconventional and darker inspirations can be transformed into a chic and compelling interior design.
