We Spoke to the NYC Woman Who Found a Whole Apartment Behind Her Bathroom Mirror
Samantha Hartsoe, a 26-year-old New Yorker, discovered an entire hidden apartment behind her bathroom mirror, an incident that quickly went viral on TikTok. The discovery occurred when Hartsoe noticed an unusual draft in her bathroom after returning from a hiking trip. Investigating the source, she found that the mirror above her sink was not securely attached to the wall. Upon lifting the mirror, she uncovered a hole, resembling a space where a medicine cabinet might have once been, leading into another room.
Driven by curiosity, and despite her roommate John's apprehension, Hartsoe decided to explore the mysterious space on March 1st. She equipped herself with a face mask, a flashlight secured with a hairband, and a hammer before climbing through the hole. Once inside, she realized that returning through the small opening would be challenging due to the height difference, compelling her to explore the unfamiliar apartment to find an exit.
The newly discovered area turned out to be a full three-bedroom apartment with open windows, which explained the cold draft. Inside, Hartsoe observed 'signs of life,' including trash bags and an empty water bottle, which initially made her uneasy about encountering someone. However, as she proceeded, it became clear that the apartment was vacant, stripped, and appeared to be uninhabitable. She noted that the space seemed very old, and its shower/bathroom area consisted only of piping, lacking a functional tub or toilet. The kitchen area also showed signs of being torn up, suggesting either ongoing renovation or prolonged abandonment.
Hartsoe eventually found a different exit from the mysterious apartment. This exit led her to a hallway located elsewhere within her apartment complex, indicating that the space was not merely the apartment directly adjacent to hers, as some TikTok users had initially speculated. She had to navigate through the building's common areas to return to her own apartment. Despite the unsettling nature of the experience, Hartsoe reported feeling more secure sleeping in her own apartment afterward. She continues to avoid her bathroom when possible, however.
The incident generated further questions regarding the building's management and the nature of the hidden apartment. Hartsoe awaited an inspection from the management office to determine the next steps, such as whether the opening would be sealed or if the discovery would impact her tenancy in an unexpected way. The situation highlights the peculiar and sometimes unnerving realities of urban living, particularly in dense environments like New York City.
