Hot spots: Refinery Hotel, New York
The Refinery Hotel, a new boutique hotel in Midtown Manhattan, is situated on West 38th Street within the Garment District. The hotel occupies a revamped 1912 neo-gothic millinery building, with its transformation led by architects and designers Stonehill & Taylor. At the time of a recent stay, some finishing touches were still being applied, including ongoing painting and the construction of the rooftop bar, indicating its very recent opening. The rooftop space, spanning 325 square metres, offers both indoor and outdoor areas with expansive views of the Manhattan skyline, notably including the Empire State Building, and is anticipated to become a popular spot for locals.
The hotel's design leans towards an industrial-elegant aesthetic rather than a purely funky one. The lobby exemplifies this with its long arcade and plaster groin ceilings. Design elements subtly reference the building's historical use as a millinery, such as antique clock-face elevator indicators and a rug motif depicting milliner's tools. Winnie's Lobby Bar, named after a former tenant, features strap-leather sling chairs, chocolate brown leather ottomans, and balloon-glass table lamps. The bar's interior boasts rich wall paneling and egg-shell white walls, creating a refined atmosphere. The hotel staff are noted for their attentiveness and attractive appearance, often observed wearing a uniform of jeans, checked shirts, and suspenders, which pays homage to the milliners who once worked in the building.
The 197 guest rooms are designed to evoke classic New York City lofts, characterized by 12-foot ceilings, dark-stained hardwood floors, large windows, and impressive city views. The industrial theme is further integrated through details like sewing machine-inspired desks, steel and leather headboards with brass buckles, and upholstery featuring overlock seams. The bathrobes provided are described as exceptionally fluffy and luxurious. Bathrooms are notably spacious for New York standards, offering custom inlaid stone mosaic flooring, marble-top vanities, full-size bathtubs, and English brass fittings, contributing to a sense of comfort and luxury.
