Blackberry Farm Design approached the renovation by keeping the structural elements of the inn intact, focusing instead on updating the 20 guest rooms and main living spaces. In early 2022, Brooklyn-based designer Whitney Parris-Lamb discovered a century-old cabin in the Hudson Valley, which had remained unsold despite its potential. Her business partner, Amanda Jesse, initially harbored reservations due to the cottage's extensive deferred maintenance and haphazard additions over the years. However, Jesse recognized Parris-Lamb’s talent for revitalizing properties, and the duo, who co-founded the design firm Jesse Parris-Lamb, proceeded with the acquisition and renovation. Their firm is known for creating elegantly refined yet cozy spaces, characterized by bespoke furnishings and tactile materials like terra cotta tiles and cork wallpaper. Their approach to the Captain Whidbey involved immersing themselves in the inn's existing environment for nine months before making significant changes, allowing them to connect with the landscape, history, and community that held many cherished memories of the beloved place. The renovation incorporated a collaborative spirit, inviting various designers to contribute their unique visions. The four stand-alone cabins, for instance, were given to different designers like We the Nomads, Glasswing, Whidbey Edit, and heritage company Filson, with no specific directives. The fin installation, glossy black on one side and sepia-toned on the other, creates a lenticular effect as guests move through the restaurant or view it from the sidewalk. The project is the result of a two-year restoration by Havana-born dancer and musician Sandy Solano Diahave and Dutch fashion designer and artist André Visser. The hotel, formerly a baroque 19th-century mansion, is situated in a city recognized for its diverse architectural heritage, encompassing Spanish colonial, Art Deco, and 1950s styles, many of which face challenges from environmental factors and economic conditions, despite their UNESCO protection. The A|S Residence comprises five suites and four junior suites. The restoration aimed to maintain the original character of the building while integrating modern design. This approach is evident in the preservation of architectural features such as towering five-meter-high ceilings, exposed brickwork, stripped doors, and woodwork.
