To minimize its impact on the natural landscape, Worrell Yeung meticulously positioned the addition within the smallest possible footprint, ensuring that no existing trees were removed during construction. Nido Architecture co-founders Chiara Patrassi and Alexandra Bernaudin collaborated with hotel owner and director Carine Tissot and six contemporary artists to design the interiors of the Drawing Hotel in Paris. Tissot, also co-founder of the annual Drawing Now Art Fair, provided the artists with creative freedom to decorate the hotel's hallways. Despite initial unfamiliarity with contemporary drawing, Patrassi noted the artists' enthusiasm and willingness to work with new mediums. The hotel features five distinct floors, each showcasing a unique visual theme. Swedish painter Thomas Broomé utilized perspective grayscale lettering for wallpaper depicting an ideal library on the top floor. Watercolorist Françoise Pétrovitch designed the fourth floor with forest green walls, sophisticated paintings in simple frames, and variegated tufted wool carpeting. Draftsman Clément Bagot's abstract colorful splashes are embedded behind glass panes in all-black walls on the third floor. Muralist Abdelkader Benchamma hand-drew trees and plants on white walls for the second floor, and graffiti duo Lek & Sowat created a psychedelic environment spanning walls, ceiling, and floor on the first level. These vibrant corridors contrast with the calm, relaxed atmosphere of the 48 guest rooms, where artist-designed printed-fabric headboards serve as a transitional element. The hotel was an unexpected venture for Tissot, who discovered the building while seeking a location for a permanent gallery. Patrassi and Bernaudin joined the project in 2016, during the initial construction phase of the ground floor. Faced with the typical Parisian challenge of limited space, the architects made crucial alterations, such as replacing frosted-glass shower modules with transparent ones and substituting minuscule closets with glass-and-steel wardrobes to create separate toilet areas. The overarching design principle was _chaleureux_, meaning welcoming, prominently featured through tinted oak paneling and custom wood furnishings throughout the hotel. This included the lounge's leather sofas, reception desk, bar, and various tables. The ground level, spanning 1,900 square feet, posed a significant challenge, needing to accommodate the entrance, reception, retail space, and lounge. The reception area features an angular design with low shelves displaying books and objects for sale. A partition of oak rods, serving as a library, defines the adjoining lobby, which includes a bold black-and-white rug, a Neri & Hu loveseat, and a sculptural Philippe Nigro chair. Beyond this, the cocktail lounge overlooks a courtyard with red walls, a tribute to Luis Barragán. Stairs lead to the basement Drawing Lab, a contemporary gallery that was the genesis of the hotel concept. The exterior of the hotel more closely resembles a bookstore or art shop than a traditional hotel, reflecting the goal of achieving a gallery atmosphere rather than a 'deco' look. The roof terrace offers guests views of the surrounding Parisian mansard rooftops, furnished seasonally with tables, chairs, and umbrellas. The stairs leading to the terrace are currently painted white, with the possibility of future artistic installations. Zhongshuge bookstore, located on the second floor of an atrium mall in an office tower in Suzhou's new central business district, offers a unique and innovative approach to bookstore design, diverging significantly from traditional, static models. Shanghainese design studios Wutopia Lab and ArchUnits, responsible for the project, have transformed the space into a dynamic and engaging environment, aptly named 'love book pavilion,' which also subtly references the owner's daughter. This project challenges conventional norms of bookstore aesthetics and integrates with its unconventional location by employing creative design solutions. To manage the extensive area, the designers utilized perforated aluminum panels suspended from the ceiling, shaping them into fluid, wavy forms. These panels are colored in soft pastel shades, including pink, red, and green, with each color serving to delineate specific functional zones within the bookstore. From a street-level perspective, this ceiling installation creates the striking visual effect of a metallic rainbow, drawing attention to the store's distinctive interior. The layout of the bookstore features low-rise, white-coated bookshelves that are arranged to form a 'bibliographic valley.' This valley gradually ascends through a series of shallow, platformed steps, which are themselves integrated with books. The design culminates in long, dark-stained shelves that encircle the central core of the space. This tiered arrangement not only adds visual interest but also creates varied levels for exploration and discovery within the bookstore. For comfortable reading and browsing, the space is furnished with thin-legged reading tables and low-slung chairs, strategically placed to offer convenient perches for visitors. A dedicated children's zone is a particularly imaginative feature, comprising three-dimensional cut-outs designed to resemble residential porches. These playful structures are clustered around a dark dome overhead, which is illuminated with optical fibers, creating an illusion of a starry night sky. This whimsical area provides an enchanting experience for younger visitors, fostering a love for reading in an inspiring setting. In 2024, SHISUO Design Office undertook a project for Aranya, focusing on the reimagination of lobby spaces situated within the podium levels of two mountain-view residences in Sanya, China. The architectural design of the original structure skillfully utilized the site's natural elevation changes. One side of the podium is integrated into the hillside, featuring a narrow lightwell that penetrates the interior. Conversely, the opposite side connects to a series of terraced platforms, designed to serve as the main entrance for residents. A covered corridor acts as an introductory element to the residential area. The design incorporates volcanic rock cladding on the walls, creating distinct framed window openings. These openings are strategically positioned to either frame views of the exterior landscape or to form a perforated screen, allowing natural light to filter through its gaps. This interplay of light and shadow introduces a rhythmic quality to the extended space, effectively transitioning between the external environment and the interior spaces. The design emphasizes a harmonious integration with the natural surroundings, while also creating a dynamic and visually engaging entry experience for the residents. The project covers an area of 1200 square meters and was completed in 2024. Sanif is credited for the photographs capturing the essence of the design. WTD GROUP served as the landscape consultant, contributing to the integration of the built environment with its natural context. Chongqing Hechuang Co., Ltd was responsible for the construction, ensuring the structural integrity and quality of the build. Norwegian architecture practice Superunion has meticulously designed a small, multifunctional space for Atelier Felix, located within Oslo's renowned Kunstnernes Hus. This project, undertaken by a firm Wallpaper* identified as 'ones to watch' in their 2014 Architects Directory, transforms an existing gallery space into a versatile area accommodating a workshop, reading room, and exhibition space. Kunstnernes Hus, an early example of Norwegian functionalism designed in 1930 by architects Blakstad and Munthe-Kaas, continues to be a central hub for contemporary art in Oslo. Superunion's design respectfully integrates into this historic context while introducing a distinct new character. The Atelier Felix space is designed for maximum flexibility, featuring three distinct zones. A bespoke wall unit serves as a floor-to-ceiling shelving system, providing ample display space for artists and the public to showcase temporary works. This shelving unit also cleverly encloses a more private reading area behind it, complete with space-saving window seats, maximizing the utility of the compact footprint. A key element of the design is a spiralling, sheer curtain that acts as a flexible room divider. This weightless partition allows for the separation of the workshop area from the rest of the room, creating an intimate setting without completely isolating it. The transparent nature of the curtain ensures that natural light continues to permeate the entire space, maintaining an open and airy feel. Further enhancing the connection to its surroundings, a wall-length window offers views of the bustling café below, allowing visitors to engage with the vibrant atmosphere while maintaining a sense of tranquility within the Atelier Felix. Architect Vilhelm Christensen from Superunion emphasizes that the design drew inspiration directly from the historical building itself. The practice's primary goal was to honor the existing architecture while imbuing the new space with a unique contemporary identity. This balance is achieved through the incorporation of crisp lines and a Scandinavian minimalist aesthetic, which directly mirrors the classical cubic forms of Kunstnernes Hus. The color palette of the space also pays homage to the building's heritage.
