AI illustrations of food adorn vibrant mosaic plates for dining table installation in hong kong
O&O Studio and REhyphenation collaborated to create “Meet’n Meal,” a spatial and cultural installation featured at the Sai Kung Hoi Arts Festival in Hong Kong. This project serves as a pilot tourism initiative, spanning three years, aimed at diversifying tourist offerings and enriching the visitor experience, both for local residents and international guests. The installation explores the intricate connections between architecture, cultural heritage, and community gathering, specifically reinterpreting Hakka traditions through its spatial design. At the heart of the installation is a dining table, which functions as a central symbol of reunion and shared history, drawing inspiration from the Chinese hieroglyph for 'Home' (家) and integrating elements of traditional village life.
The installation is strategically placed against the historic front wall of a former village house, a location chosen for its significance in reflecting the island’s past. The circular dining table, crafted from steel framing, fiberglass, and stone-textured paint, draws a direct parallel to the island’s historical salt pans, which were crucial to its economy and culinary practices. The round shape of the table symbolizes inclusivity and community participation, inviting visitors to gather and engage. Rather than relying solely on physical artifacts, the project gathers oral histories and traditional Hakka culinary practices, using these narratives to evoke memories and deepen the cultural experience.
A key artistic component of “Meet’n Meal” is the inclusion of sixteen plates, some of which are traditional Hakka bowls. These plates feature AI-generated representations of local dishes, such as fish, puffer fish, pork stew, steamed glutinous rice cake, and glass candy. This artistic choice highlights the historical and cultural importance of food within the village community. The plates themselves are constructed from vibrant mosaics, a design choice that not only adds visual appeal but also symbolically links the installation to the stained glass found in the island’s Catholic church, thereby connecting the past with the present.
O&O Studio, a multidisciplinary design practice, and Joyce Fok, an artist from REhyphenation, intentionally selected materials and design elements that emphasize a strong connection to nature. The installation integrates light-filtering effects, designed to absorb sunlight throughout the day and subtly warm the space. This thoughtful interaction between the chosen materials and natural elements reflects the rural lifestyle historically practiced on the island, where food and resources were traditionally sourced directly from the surrounding environment. This approach underscores the project's commitment to ecological and cultural authenticity.
“Meet’n Meal” aims to foster cross-generational participation, reconnecting former villagers with their cultural heritage and inviting visitors to delve into the island’s rich history. The project actively encourages dialogue and interaction, facilitating storytelling, poetry writing, and conversations between guests and long-time residents. Beyond its artistic merits, the installation serves as a symbolic gathering space that effectively bridges architecture, memory, and cultural preservation. It provides a multi-sensory experience, enabling visitors to rediscover Yim Tin Tsai’s heritage through its culinary and spatial narratives, ultimately contributing to the revitalization of this historic Hakka village.
