Wutopia Lab, led by founder and principal Ting Yu, has designed a parent-child branch of Duoyun Bookstore in Yancheng, China. Despite initially hesitating to take on another bookstore project after completing the award-winning Taizhou outpost, Yu was swayed by Yancheng's historical significance, rich resources, rapid development, and its need for fresh, globally-aligned experiences. Yancheng, whose name translates to 'salt city,' boasts a two-millennia-long history rooted in natural river salt reserves and is home to over 8 million people. Yu recognized the city's potential as a canvas for his creative approach to experiential retail design. The inspiration for the bookstore's whimsical theme stemmed from the work of Italian illustrator Cristina Làstrego, whose extensive collection of over 170 children's books, adapted into films and online media, deeply impressed Yu. He aimed to translate Làstrego's imaginative and moving scenes into a fairy-tale bookstore that could transport visitors, both young and old, to a place of childlike wonder. Duoyun Bookstore, which operates six branches across China, partnered with Jiangsu Spring Blossom Cultural and Creative Town Cultural Tourism Industry Development Co., the owner of the intellectual property rights for Làstrego's characters like Mirò the Cat and her animated films, 'The Creation' and 'The Circus.' While Mirò is well-known in Italy, the design sought to introduce the animation to Chinese customers through simplified, whimsical interpretations of Làstrego's meticulous details, focusing on playing with scale to evoke a sense of innocent delight. The three-story bookstore, situated near a wetland park, features an exterior designed to evoke a fantastical maritime landscape, with yellow elements representing waves and a red structure resembling a docked ship. Two enclosed balconies, adorned with lilac perforated-aluminum, are laser-cut with pared-down bird or cat shapes. The interior journey begins with an elongated tunnel of perforated red aluminum, leading into the skylight book tower—an octagonal space with a red spiral staircase ascending to a cupola-like nook. Both levels of the tower are lined with built-in shelves displaying adult books and Duoyun merchandise. Adjacent to the tower is the double-height Cloud Terrace café, characterized by interlocking circular spaces and a brushed aluminum ceiling. Three distinct lighting systems—round ceiling lights with luminous film, concealed LED strips, and trough-embedded LEDs—contribute to an otherworldly ambiance. A second spiral staircase connects the café to the third floor, where a terrace is fronted by a perforated white balcony. On the opposite end of the café, the Oceania Drawing Library serves as a large open activity space for children, also hosting workshops and exhibitions. This area contains four smaller, stand-alone 'illustrated book houses,' each filled with children’s books and featuring unique laser-cut animal entries inspired by Làstrego’s 'The Creation.' These structures, each with different-colored perforated panels, offer uniformly white interiors with built-in benches, providing tranquil reading environments. A terrace on the second floor is distinguished by a red aluminum tent, a nod to one depicted in 'The Circus,' with Wutopia Lab’s version incorporating a custom carousel inside. Duoyun Bookstore is recognized as a pioneer in China’s retail book market for its integration of sales with food and beverage, education, and exhibitions. The "Mountain House in Mist" is a public library situated in Liangjiashan, an ancient village within China's Zhejiang Province. This 1,679-square-foot building, commissioned by Hongfu Tourism Group Co., Ltd., was designed by Hangzhou-based Shulin Architectural Design. Located on a triangular site near the village square, it stands adjacent to preserved rammed-earth Chinese courtyard houses, blending modern architecture with traditional surroundings. The library's design incorporates steel and wood for its main structure, featuring materials like pine, terrazzo, and clear "sun panels" that allow natural light to permeate the interior. A distinctive architectural feature is its elevation on ten columns, a design choice reminiscent of rural homes in Southeast Asia built to withstand floods. This elevation creates a sheltered, open-air patio on the ground level beneath the library, complete with a small pond. Shulin Architectural Design has created a serene reading space for the residents of Liangjiashan Village, located in an ancient mountain forest in China's Wuyi County, Jinhua, Zhejiang Province. The project, named 'Liangjia Mountain, Wuyi · Mountain House in Mist,' serves as a community book house aimed at providing a calm and quiet environment for children, young people, and the elderly. The 156 square meter structure utilizes a steel-wood frame and features a semi-outdoor open space on the ground level, while the upper floor houses the main reading areas and bookshelves. The book house is designed to integrate seamlessly with its natural surroundings, sitting close to the village square and traditional rammed earth courtyard houses. Ten columns support the building, creating a semi-outdoor patio on the ground floor. This patio includes a water surface designed to reflect the surrounding nature, sunlight, and weather, fostering a harmonious coexistence between people, space, and nature. Lead architect Liu Dongying emphasizes that this patio is conceived as a special space that awaits the creation of its significance through the interplay of natural elements like sun, rain, and breeze. The second floor, accessible via an outdoor staircase, is dedicated to reading and features two rounds of back-shaped bookshelves and various reading nooks. A one-meter-wide corridor allows readers to move around the space. The location of the book house is strategic; situated in a triangular area, it has a main walkway to the south and a three-meter stone wall to the north. On top of this wall is a children’s playground, which is at the same level as the book house's second floor, providing easy access for children to read or play while parents can supervise from within the reading areas. A key architectural feature is the facade, clad in relatively rare translucent sun panels for the village. These panels render the entire house translucent, allowing natural light to filter gently into the interior, creating a comfortable and luminous reading environment. The translucent material also offers glimpses of the external landscape, achieving a semi-transparent spatial experience that connects the indoors with the outdoors. Inside, the bookshelves are crafted from three-centimeter thick pine wood, adhering to a unified modular scale. Shulin Architectural Design's approach involved extensive research and experimentation, particularly concerning morphological type and material application. The closed space of the book house is elevated, incorporating a double-sloping roof form and pitch similar to local dwellings, complete with traditional roofing and grey tiles. A subtle adjustment was made to the roof ridge, deflecting it by 6.5 degrees. This slight alteration brings a nuanced morphological change to the roof, making one side higher than the other and allowing for spatial variations through the inclination of the roof and shelves. The organization of personal libraries is a topic of considerable debate among book enthusiasts, often revealing insights into an individual's personality, interests, and reading habits. While the debate over alphabetization versus color-coding or other systems might seem trivial, for many avid readers, particularly writers, it is a deeply personal and often meticulously planned endeavor. A person's bookshelves offer a unique glimpse into their world, reflecting their intellectual journey and aesthetic preferences. Susan Sontag, for instance, eschewed alphabetical order, preferring to arrange her vast collection by subject or, for literature, by language and chronologically, following a "Beowulf to Virginia Woolf principle." She found the idea of placing disparate authors like Pynchon and Plato alphabetically nonsensical, opting instead for a thematic and historical flow. Her library was structured with distinct sections for English, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Greek, Chinese, and Russian literature, alongside ancient history, Judaism, early Christianity, Byzantium, the Middle Ages, philosophy, psychiatry, and the history of medicine. Her own works were intentionally kept out of sight in a small room. Hanya Yanagihara, on the other hand, a collector of some 12,000 books, staunchly adheres to alphabetical order, asserting that color-coding indicates a lack of genuine concern for a book's content. She regularly culls her collection, despite owning multiple editions of certain titles to give away. Conversely, Ayelet Waldman and Michael Chabon experienced a domestic bookshelf reorganization by color initiated by Chabon, which Waldman found chaotic, especially given their sons' colorblindness, often leading her to repurchase books she already owned. Fran Lebowitz organizes her books first by broad categories like fiction, letters, and essays, then by numerous subdivisions, and finally alphabetically within those. She maintains a separate biography section, despite arguments from her assistant who prefers a unified author-centric system. Lebowitz’s apartments are primarily for her books, not herself, reflecting her dedication. She also possesses an extensive reference library, including a cherished, albeit expensive, second edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. James Dickey, with his 20,000-volume library, preferred strict alphabetization by author, believing that subject classification was too prone to overlap. Erica Jong, during a house hunt, noted that many writers are compelled to find homes large enough for their books.
