3 Kitchens, 3 Styles

This article showcases three distinct kitchen renovation projects, each reflecting a unique design philosophy and addressing specific homeowner needs in St. Louis. Each project was led by a different designer, demonstrating how varied approaches can transform a kitchen space while maintaining functionality and aesthetic appeal. The first kitchen, dubbed "Zen Modern" by designer Ash Leonard of Ash Leonard Design, focused on integrating modern materials with existing traditional architectural elements in a Ladue home. The goal was to refresh the kitchen's look without altering its footprint, emphasizing texture for cohesion. Key design choices included solid walnut slab-door cabinetry by Shady Creek Woodworking, which provided a warm and natural feel, alongside functional hidden elements like a coffee station, ice machine, and wine chiller. Hardware featured solid brass and matte black pulls from Locks & Pulls, complemented by Brizo faucets. A distinctive Wasabi Green tile by WOW Design served as the backsplash, chosen for its patina and ability to blend with the exterior views. Lighting was addressed with a long, cylindrical glass fixture by TEC Electric over the island, and the flooring utilized gray-washed wood-like porcelain tile in a traditional pattern. Super White marble in a suede finish was selected for counters and backsplash to balance darker elements, while original wood ceiling beams, white-painted brick, and white wood paneling were preserved and integrated, with a custom range hood mimicking the existing paneling. The second project, a "Pretty Scene" in a West County kitchen, was designed by Chelsea Smith of Chelsea Design Co. for empty nesters seeking to create a sense of spaciousness without expanding the room's physical size. Smith achieved this by installing larger windows and removing a wall of cabinets that previously cluttered the space. The color palette and materials were subtle yet striking. A Calacatta marble mosaic backsplash from The Tile Shop, installed all the way to the ceiling by Luke Spain of Pristine Tile, was a crucial element in creating an expansive feel. The original two double-hung windows were replaced with three new 50-inch Pella windows, and the sink was repositioned to maximize views of the wooded landscape. The wall color, Sherwin-Williams' Natural Choice, provided a neutral and warm backdrop, while stark white cabinets offered visual layering. Silver Pearl granite from Custom Stone Interiors in a "leather" finish was chosen for countertops to introduce contrast. The island was reconfigured, trimmed, and elongated to serve as both a workspace and a dining area for four, incorporating storage and a walnut butcher block. The third kitchen, a "Bespoke Beauty," was crafted by designer Jenny B, known for custom, vintage-inspired interiors, for homeowners Ron and Jessie Mueller. This renovation drew inspiration from the English countryside, incorporating handmade details and nature-inspired flourishes within a historic Georgian Revival home. The design process was collaborative, blending the homeowners' preferences with Jenny B's expertise. Notable features included a brass pot rail from deVOL Kitchens and honed Danby marble countertops and backsplash, which, despite initial reservations about marble's maintenance, were chosen for their timeless beauty. Lighting included modern pendants from Restoration Hardware, reminiscent of Parisian streetlamps, and beehive-shaped sconces by Kelly Wearstler for Stoffer Home. An Italian Bertazzoni oven in black was selected for its traditional look and masculine touch, accommodating the owners' love for cooking. Distressed chestnut cabinets and dark-stained bar cabinets with smoked-glass fronts provided contrast. Hardware, including antique and unlacquered brass pieces, was sourced from Mark Lewis Interior Design in London, celebrated for its handcrafted quality and developing patina. A 12-foot pantry with rattan insets subtly introduced a Midcentury modern touch, echoed by rattan-backed bar stools. Unique woodpecker door handles from Schaub, purchased at Locks & Pulls, added a whimsical detail. The breakfast nook featured vibrant hollyhock wallpaper from House of Hackney, creating a biophilic design moment that brought the English countryside indoors. #KitchenDesign #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #ModernKitchen #TraditionalKitchen #EnglishCountryKitchen #StLouisDesign #DesignInspiration #KitchenDecor #KitchenDesign #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #ModernKitchen #TraditionalKitchen #EnglishCountryKitchen #StLouisDesign #DesignInspiration #KitchenDecor
