3 Kitchen Cabinet Styles Are Better Than 1—Give This Craftsman-Inspired Trio a Try

This blog post explores the design philosophy of incorporating multiple kitchen cabinet styles to create a dynamic and visually appealing space, as articulated by senior designer Patrick Maziarski of A 1000x Better. Maziarski advocates for using three distinct elements rather than one or two, which he believes can result in a "super-flat" or insufficiently dynamic look. His preferred combination for a recent Craftsman-inspired kitchen renovation in Sierra Madre, California, involved natural wood, metal, and painted wood. This approach was implemented in a kitchen that previously featured a Tuscan-revival style, which felt out of sync with the home's overall Craftsman character. The renovation aimed to infuse the kitchen with an "old-school flavor" by using detailed cupboard fronts with extra-deep panels, creating more pronounced shadows and depth. The design thoughtfully integrates functionality, including a glassware display, an appliance garage, and lower drawers designed to conceal trash bins and an ice maker, all while maintaining aesthetic coherence through the three distinct styles. Maziarski suggests that the three elements together create a dynamic visual interest that single-style cabinetry often lacks. The first element, natural wood, specifically dark-toned oak, is strategically used for the island, vent hood, and a tall appliance garage. This choice was intended to evoke the feel of "added-on vintage pieces," drawing inspiration from traditional Craftsman kitchens while avoiding a monolithic wood appearance. A notable feature is a built-in nook designed to hide a toaster, which functions more like a piece of furniture. Its lower left panels can fold and retract, ensuring they don't obstruct the prep area when open. The second element involves painted wood, featuring creamy-toned white cabinetry. This section, primarily located below the Silestone countertop, houses practical components such as two small garbage bins, a pull-out for cleaning supplies, a pellet ice maker, a wine fridge, and stacked drawers for bread and silverware. The color chosen for these cabinets is Farrow & Ball’s Wimborne White, which seamlessly connects this area with the pantry cupboards, creating a unified and serene backdrop for the more functional aspects of the kitchen. The third and final element introduces a contemporary touch with black, steel-lined metal cabinets featuring glass fronts. These cabinets are utilized for displaying serveware, transforming the nook into a versatile makeshift bar area. This inclusion of metal and glass provides a modern contrast to the natural and painted wood, completing the dynamic trio of styles. The combination of these three distinct cabinet styles—natural wood for warmth and a vintage feel, painted white wood for brightness and hidden utility, and metal-framed glass for a contemporary display—successfully breaks up visual monotony and enhances both the character and functionality of the kitchen space, aligning with the Craftsman aesthetic while offering modern amenities. #KitchenDesign #CabinetryStyles #CraftsmanInterior #HomeRenovation #KitchenCabinets #InteriorDesignTrends #DesignInspiration #MaterialMixing #KitchenDesign #CabinetryStyles #CraftsmanInterior #HomeRenovation #KitchenCabinets #InteriorDesignTrends #DesignInspiration #MaterialMixing
