This Balinese-style Bengaluru villa wins hearts with its zen-like tea room

Navneeth Krishna, a sports presenter for Royal Challengers Bangalore, and his partner Deepti sought a tranquil villa on the outskirts of Bengaluru after living in various apartments between India and Singapore. They discovered a plot rich in greenery, which ultimately led them to commission Vinithra Amarnathan of Weespaces. The couple, inspired by their travels, desired a Balinese-influenced home, drawn to Amarnathan's clean and minimalistic yet adaptable aesthetic. The design challenge was to transform an under-construction shell into a 3,000-square-foot villa that would accommodate them, Navneeth's parents, and guests, while reflecting their heritage within a modern framework. The villa's architectural layout, though initially appealing, presented obstacles due to its oddly proportioned rooms, which had ample quantity but limited individual square footage. A prime example is the long, narrow living room, where the designer had to meticulously plan a practical and visually pleasing seating arrangement. To incorporate the requested Balinese influences, Vinithra Amarnathan introduced a granite-clad feature wall adorned with artwork, serving as a focal point to distract from the room's challenging shape. This wall also discreetly houses a sleek TV that can display photos or art, enhancing the room's aesthetic and functionality. The living room seamlessly connects to the dining area and kitchen, which are positioned on a mezzanine and framed by a wall niche, fostering a sense of openness despite the villa's blocky layout. The dining area features a clean-lined, picnic-style table and wooden ceiling beams, reflecting Amarnathan's signature minimalist yet warm style. A personal touch is added through a collection of Athangudi tile prints on the wall, a subtle homage to Deepti’s Tamil heritage, showcasing the designer's attention to detail. A distinctive feature of the villa is the tea room, located on the first floor. This space was originally intended as a lounge but was re-envisioned at Deepti's request, with a brief for oriental touches. The result is a refreshing and cozy environment featuring a wood and cane couch, grey wainscotted walls, and delicate bamboo pendant lamps. The highlight is a custom cabinet with gilt-edged drawers and striking burnt orange shelving, which seamlessly integrates with the overall decor, a design element Navneeth initially had reservations about. Another room on this floor was converted into a compact studio for Navneeth. The primary bedroom and bathroom, situated on the second level, were designed as a surprise for Deepti and epitomize the couple’s preference for Balinese decor. The bedroom exudes tranquility with its stucco walls and minimal decoration. The ensuite bathroom is particularly notable, featuring a rattan false ceiling, a skylight, and tropical plants, evoking a vacation-like ambiance. Navneeth reflects on the extensive deliberation involved in the design process, acknowledging that he and Deepti had to learn to trust the designer's vision. Vinithra Amarnathan appreciated the couple's openness to taking design risks, which allowed her to visualize and execute the space uniquely. Six months after moving in, the couple expresses deep satisfaction with their new home. #BalineseStyle #BengaluruHomes #VillaDesign #Weespaces #VinithraAmarnathan #InteriorDesign #MinimalistDesign #TeaRoom #ArchitecturalDesign #BalineseStyle #BengaluruHomes #VillaDesign #Weespaces #VinithraAmarnathan #InteriorDesign #MinimalistDesign #TeaRoom #ArchitecturalDesign
