The renovation addressed several issues, including weakened structure, creaking mud walls, faded red oxide flooring, inadequate lighting, absence of attached baths, and lack of wardrobe spaces in bedrooms. Additionally, newly introduced furniture did not align with the home's traditional aesthetic. The restoration project involved significant interior reconfigurations and some exterior modifications. A car porch was added, and built-in outdoor seating was created at the entrance. Internally, a wall separating the dining and kitchen areas was removed to establish an open-plan kitchen. Above the dining room, a slab was raised to accommodate wardrobes and bathrooms in two first-floor bedrooms. The walls of three original first-floor bedrooms were demolished to form two larger bedrooms. The primary suite on the ground floor was extended by constructing a slab of the same height in the former store and clothes drying area. A key challenge was sourcing materials and skilled labor for the renovation. Many traditional materials were either unavailable locally or difficult to procure, leading the architect to travel extensively across India to customize and obtain them. For instance, Athangudi tiles for flooring and walls were sourced from Athangudi village, and green flora glass, characteristic of old Chettinad homes, was acquired for the facade's dramatic grill design. Laterite blocks were incorporated for thermal insulation, lime plaster for walls, wood for arches and pillars, and concrete jaali for decorative elements. The design predominantly used primary colors, balanced with natural wood hues, and emphasized handmade, earthy materials to preserve the home's traditional and cozy ambiance. Naik also undertook the restoration and upcycling of several vintage items. An antique door was transformed into a dining table top, an old temple door frame became a full-length mirror, and a grinding stone was converted into a planter.
