The Breakfast Peninsula Takes On a New Look in This U-Shaped Kitchen Reno
This article details the renovation of a U-shaped kitchen in a vacation rental in Balm Beach, Ontario, focusing on creating a visually striking and durable space suitable for short-term guests. The project was spearheaded by Autumn Hachey of Stay Here, a studio specializing in branding, marketing, and interior design for rental properties, with collaboration from interior designer Jilian Smith of Twenty-Two Twelve. The primary goal was to transform a previously understated kitchen into a 'showstopping space' to attract clientele, leading to a significant budget allocation towards its design.
A key design element is the Calacatta Paonazzo countertop and backsplash, which features dynamic green and gold veining. While appearing to be real marble, it is actually a thick slab of printed porcelain chosen for its resilience and resistance to staining, a practical consideration for a rental property where maintenance can be unpredictable. This choice was crucial in punching up the aesthetic of the formerly subway-tiled kitchen.
Further enhancements included upgrading the kitchen’s existing IKEA cabinet frames. Modern fronts were added, and painted in Benjamin Moore’s Nantucket Gray, an olive green shade that, despite its name, is far from a neutral. This color choice complements the vibrant countertops and contributes to the kitchen's new, bold personality. To address the cork flooring, which was too costly to replace, a large diamond-patterned jute rug from Annie Selke was introduced. This natural, stain-resistant rug not only grounds the space but also adds a textural element that, from a distance, mimics the appearance of tile.
The dining area also underwent a significant transformation. The previous setup with a farmhouse table and old wood sofas was replaced with a built-in nook featuring bench-style seating. This cognac leather-like vinyl fabric seating is easy to clean and provides hidden storage, encouraging gathering and offering practical benefits for a rental. The kitchen's appliances were also updated, with a Fisher & Paykel refrigerator featuring an exterior filtered water dispenser, enhancing guest convenience and freeing up internal fridge space.
One of the most impactful changes involved redesigning the peninsula. Previously, an IKEA island was awkwardly positioned against the stove, creating a 'forgotten area.' The designers extended the cabinetry to complete a U-shaped layout, adding about 2 feet to the countertop to create additional seating. The base of this new peninsula is covered in plaster, serving as an attractive feature for both cooks and guests in the adjacent living room, where it doubles as a bar or a casual perch. This comprehensive renovation successfully transformed the kitchen into a highly functional, durable, and aesthetically appealing space, optimized for a vacation rental.
