bohemian art house 'maison colbert' summons wes anderson's eclectic taste in london
Maison Colbert, a bohemian-inspired art house in Aldgate, London, is the result of a collaborative design effort between husband and wife pop artists Philip and Charlotte Colbert, Buchanan Studio, and Chris Dyson Architects. The project involved transforming a 6,000-square-foot five-story Victorian terraced house into a vibrant and eclectic residence, drawing inspiration from the whimsical and eccentric aesthetic often seen in filmmaker Wes Anderson's works. The exterior features re-imagined facades resembling set-designed shop fronts, such as a fancy goods store and a lobster monger, hinting at the unique interiors within.
Upon entering, divisions within the original structure were removed to create expansive open spaces that fluidly transition between an art gallery, creative studio, and living areas. The ground floor houses an underground art gallery, meticulously curated with a blend of antique and custom-designed pieces. Highlights include a salvaged wood coffee table by the French House, antique chairs, a unique pendant light, and a trompe l'oeil painting designed by Buchanan Studio with artist Ian Harper. Charlotte Colbert’s sculpture, 'Vegetable Motherhood,' displayed on a faux marble plinth, further enhances the artistic ambiance of the space.
A central feature on the ground floor is the Concierge and Bar area, which distinctly references Wes Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel. This space is designed with a marble counter, specific arrangements for a bellboy, and holds brass room keys with tassels, creating an immersive and playful atmosphere. Adjacent to this, an exterior terrace provides views of trompe l'oeil walls, furnished with wall lights, a day bed, and reclaimed terracotta tiles. The terrace also showcases sculptures by Philip Colbert and a marble bust set within a wall niche, extending the artistic narrative to the outdoor areas.
The second floor of Maison Colbert features a double-height ceiling and an open-plan living space seamlessly integrated with a kitchen constructed from reclaimed Iroko wood. This area is adorned with significant artworks, including 'Vietnam Diptych' by Jeff Keen and 'Black Strap (Red Fly)' by Rose Wylie, which hang above a hand-carved, double-sided fireplace. The furniture in this living area includes an eye-shaped marble coffee table, marble side tables designed in collaboration by Buchanan Studio and Charlotte Colbert, and plush sofas and armchairs placed on a large, hand-dyed vintage rug, complemented by strategically placed plants.
Throughout the residence, multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and additional entertaining spaces are characterized by vibrant colors and kaleidoscope-hued fixtures. Each bedroom is uniquely themed to reflect the playful characters and artistic motifs prevalent in the homeowners' works, such as lobsters and uteruses. The design fluctuates between neutral and flamboyant aesthetics, creating a dynamic and engaging environment. Maison Colbert functions as a living art house, conceived to be a wonderland for artists and creatives, showcasing a blend of architectural transformation, interior design, and personal artistic expression by the owners and the design team.
