Alexander Schul on environmental-conscious design
The 'Substantial Furniture' collection, developed by German product designer Alexander Schul, emerged from a commitment to repurpose plastic waste into a new aesthetic for sustainable furniture. The project, encompassing a range of items from seating to lighting, received recognition at the 2019 Rossana Orlandi Guiltless Plastic Contest. Schul, a 25-year-old designer, combines mathematical, technical, and creative talents to address contemporary challenges through design, always striving for solutions that benefit individuals, industry, and environmental standards.
Schul's journey with 'Substantial Furniture' began after his work was showcased at the Designblok Prague diploma selection in 2018, where Rossana Orlandi, a jury member, encouraged him to enter the Guiltless Plastic competition. The project was self-motivated, making the award a validation of his design philosophy. The collection distinguishes itself by integrating functionality, industrial reproducibility, and a pure aesthetic. The deliberate choice of using a single material contributes to a clean visual appeal that allows the furniture to blend seamlessly into various interior styles. Furthermore, the pieces are designed for practical storage and shipping, as they are composed of flat-packable parts.
The production process for 'Substantial Furniture' is streamlined, involving cutting, press-molding, and CNC-milling of the recycled plastic material, with assembly requiring only screws. The sheets are produced by Smile Plastics. The distinctive visual pattern of the material is a direct result of the diverse plastic waste used, simplifying the manufacturing process, as separating colors would be more complex and less efficient. Small reflective details within the material originate from shredded aluminum remnants found in yogurt cups. This visual effect is not merely aesthetic but a direct consequence of an efficient and waste-conscious manufacturing approach.
Schul's design philosophy is influenced by the principles of timelessness, drawing inspiration from figures like Dieter Rams and his '10 Commandments of Good Design'. He also finds inspiration in philosophy, particularly Eastern philosophy as interpreted by Alan Watts, which offers different perspectives crucial for developing strong concepts. Architecture is another field that fuels his creativity. When considering hypothetical projects with unlimited resources, Schul envisions three ambitious undertakings: a luxury hotel constructed entirely from environmentally friendly materials, designs for Mars colonization housing, and his own electric car concept focused on safety and aesthetics.
Sustainability is a core value that will consistently be integrated into Schul’s work, viewed not as a fleeting trend but as a defining issue for decades to come. He believes that just as the industrial revolution shaped design by prioritizing efficient production, the current era demands a design approach centered on resource reuse and conservation. This translates to creating products that are durable, made from recycled materials, and easily recyclable, contributing to a more circular economy and addressing the problems stemming from the careless use of resources. For aspiring designers, Schul advises considering personal temperament when deciding between employment and entrepreneurship; security and structured learning come with a job, while freedom and excitement define starting one's own firm, a path suited for those comfortable with uncertainty and potential setbacks, though he himself is currently completing a Master's Degree before making his next career move.
