6 Ways to Host in an Open Layout Without the Chaos, According to an Etiquette Pro

Hosting a party in an open-concept home presents unique challenges compared to traditional layouts, primarily because the kitchen, often a behind-the-scenes prep area, becomes part of the guest's view. Etiquette expert Nick Leighton emphasizes that while hosting in such a space can be trickier, it is far from impossible with proper planning and a shift in perspective. Leighton advises hosts to embrace the open layout and treat the kitchen as a stage. This means acknowledging that guests will see everything and proactively moving any unwanted items or clutter out of sight, much like clearing the stage wings. The goal is to integrate the kitchen seamlessly into the party's flow, rather than attempting to hide it or direct guests away. This approach ensures that the natural progression of the party remains a top priority. Advanced preparation is crucial for success in an open-plan setting. Leighton suggests completing as many messy tasks as possible before guests arrive, allowing ample time for cleanup. This minimizes visible disarray during the event. A practical tip involves starting with an empty dishwasher. Instead of using it to hide final dirty dishes, hosts should handwash, dry, and put away items quickly. This strategy frees up the dishwasher to collect dirty dishes discreetly as they accumulate throughout the party, helping to maintain a tidy appearance. To prevent guests from congregating exclusively in the kitchen, hosts should actively create alternative "destinations" within the home. This could involve setting up a dedicated beverage station in a different area or arranging snacks and nibbles away from the main food preparation zone. By strategically placing these attractions, hosts can guide guests to other parts of the home, distributing the crowd and alleviating pressure on the kitchen area. The menu selection also plays a significant role when hosting in an open layout. Leighton recommends avoiding dishes that involve excessive frying, searing, or anything that produces a lot of smoke or strong odors, as these can quickly permeate the entire open space. Similarly, dishes that require constant attention at the stove, such as risotto, should be avoided to free up the host. Relying on pre-made items is perfectly acceptable to simplify preparations. Using ramekins and prep bowls and concealing original packaging can enhance the kitchen's tidiness, giving it a more polished, cooking-show-like appearance. Ultimately, Leighton stresses the importance of simplicity. An open layout is not the ideal setting to showcase elaborate culinary skills, as this can lead to a high-pressure situation for the host. The primary objective of a party is for guests to enjoy themselves and each other's company, not to be impressed by complex cuisine. By prioritizing a relaxed atmosphere and focusing on enjoyable social interaction, hosts can ensure a successful and memorable event in their open-plan home. #openLayoutHosting #etiquetteTips #homeEntertaining #kitchenDesign #partyPlanning #hostTips #decorIdeas #openLayoutHosting #etiquetteTips #homeEntertaining #kitchenDesign #partyPlanning #hostTips #decorIdeas
