Innovative, Sustainable Materials for SWFL Homes

Michaela Reiterer Henning, an owner-designer at Naples-based Hlevel Architecture, highlights several innovative materials that offer durability, aesthetic appeal, and environmental benefits, especially relevant for the region's climate and susceptibility to extreme weather events. The discussion emphasizes how these materials contribute to building better, more resilient homes from the ground up. The first material discussed is Richlite, a composite product made from recycled paper and resin. Developed in 1943 in the Pacific Northwest, Richlite is recognized for its strength, water resistance, and heat resistance, making it a suitable alternative for various architectural applications. Reiterer Henning points out its utility in drywall applications, addressing concerns about mold and water damage. Richlite holds eco-friendly certifications, including Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for its paper layers. The material is created by bonding paper layers with resin under heat and pressure, producing highly durable sheets used in diverse industries, from aerospace to home construction. Available in various colors that develop a patina over time, Black Diamond is its most popular shade. Its applications range from ultra-modern cladding when paired with natural wood and large windows to flat-panel cabinets and countertops, which can dramatically complement backlit stone backsplashes. The panels can also be etched for art installations and textured furniture, demonstrating its versatility and aesthetic potential. Reiterer Henning stresses the importance of using such sustainable and long-lasting materials, especially in light of recent extreme weather events, affirming plans to integrate Richlite into future projects. Next, the article introduces Coralina, a material composed of stone, sand, and fossilized coral and shells, characteristic of its quarry locations. In South Florida, the local Florida keystone, a creamy white variant, features distinctive variations from brain and fan corals that darken over time. Reiterer Henning describes Coralina as a preferred material for its ability to evoke a subtropical flair and add a natural element to homes. While suitable for construction, its aesthetic qualities often lead to its use in decorative applications, similar to tile. It is frequently employed as an exterior veneer, for driveway applications as an alternative to asphalt or concrete, and as flooring. Examples include its use for exterior surfaces by Choeff Levy Fischman and Jeffrey Fisher Home, and for enhancing interior stairways by Dwayne Bergmann. The article also advocates for human-made coralina from eco-conscious manufacturers like Earth Surfaces of America in Naples. This version, made by mixing lime with shells and recycled stone bits, does not deplete natural quarries and is less porous and more stain-resistant than natural stone. Both natural and manufactured coralina are noted for their timeless appeal, warming up spaces with a classic look. Finally, the article highlights Cypress wood, recommended for clients who prefer natural wood. Reiterer Henning explains that cypress is ideal for the SWFL environment due to its inherent resistance to rot and insects, thriving in hot and humid conditions. Cypress trees, found from Delaware to Florida, possess narrow growth rings, which make the wood less susceptible to warping. This material is highly versatile, suitable for structural lumber in construction as well as softer interior applications and furniture. Naples-based METHOD & CONCEPT showcased cypress effectively in a Keewaydin Island beach house, integrating it with Vetrazzo countertops and translucent cabinets. The warm, honeyed tones and natural grain of cypress provide a counterpoint to minimalist, monochromatic designs. It can be used for cladding on modernist facades, built-ins framing views, and old-growth sinker cypress, reclaimed from swamps and milled into veneers, can introduce an organic touch to contemporary kitchens. Wrapping entire spaces, including ceilings, in cypress planks can create a stylish yet welcoming interior. While cypress offers numerous benefits, it does require maintenance, as it changes color and greys over time, and untreated wood exposed to sun and water may not last beyond a few years.
