W Tiles: Behind the Great Walls
The increasing global awareness of waste management has led to a rise in products made from recycled or upcycled materials. Among these innovations is W Tiles, a Surabaya-based venture that emerged from a profound concern for construction and production waste. Managed by Rayner Stefanoline, an aspiring architect, W Tiles addresses the waste management challenges faced by W Line, a company established by Rayner's parents, Stefanus and Stephanie Wijaya. Remarkably, approximately eighty percent of W Line’s waste, primarily lightone, is repurposed into W Tiles products.
The concept for W Tiles was developed over a year, involving numerous trials, errors, and extensive discussions before its official launch in July 2023. These tiles are highly versatile, suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, and have demonstrated resilience against various weather conditions. They offer an aesthetic similar to natural stone but are significantly lighter, resistant to moss, low-maintenance, and resistant to color fading. Additionally, W Tiles can be painted with standard wall paint, allowing for diverse effects, including rustic finishes. Some architects prefer to leave them in their natural state to achieve a more organic look. The finishing can also be done in other colors, such as silver, offering further design flexibility.
In terms of design, W Tiles can accommodate almost any pattern request. The manufacturing process utilizes state-of-the-art CNC machines, which ensures that producing intricate designs rarely presents difficulties. Most products are customized to meet customer preferences. The square pattern is particularly popular due to its compatibility with a wide range of architectural and interior design styles. However, the company is eager to take on challenging and unconventional requests, driven by a passion for unique designs.
W Tiles are typically offered in compact sizes, generally not exceeding 30x60 cm². However, for special projects, larger installations can be created. A notable example was their installation at the CACTACEAE exhibition, which marked the launch of BK Studio X Saniharto’s new collection. Rayner Stefanoline explained that the concept for this installation, named ‘W Topia,’ was inspired by Travis Scott’s album ‘Utopia.’ Despite the album’s planned launch at the Pyramid of Giza being canceled, the idea resonated with Rayner and perfectly complemented the CACTACEAE theme, which centered around cacti and the desert. The installation depicted temple ruins in Egypt.
With its youthful energy and innovative approach, W Tiles has significant potential for growth. Rayner Stefanoline expresses an enthusiastic vision for the company’s future, aspiring to export their products globally. This ambition is rooted in a desire to contribute significantly to the worldwide go-green architecture movement, promoting sustainable practices and eco-friendly construction materials on an international scale.
